What Happens when a Christian Backslides and How to Prevent Backsliding

“For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and  overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning. 21 For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after they have known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them.” 2 Peter 2:20-21

The prospect of drifting away from the LORD should haunt us.

We have assurance only as we abide, remain, continue in Christ—which is a daily choice. Read John 15:1-6.

“If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.” John 15:6

“Now the just shall live by faith: but if any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him.” Hebrews 10:38

“And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin. 6  Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him.” 1 John 3:5-6

“Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.  2 Corinthians 7:1

How to Prevent Backsliding

“He becometh poor that dealeth with a slack hand: but the hand of the diligent maketh rich.” Proverbs 10:4

To be rich in Christ we must be “diligent” in seeking His face daily.

To be rich in Christ is to be ready to be rich …. in Christ. Only those who are rich in fellowship, in communion with Christ are ready to meet Him.

“Be ye therefore ready also: for the Son of man cometh at an hour when ye think not.”  Luke 12:40

“Behold, I come as a thief. Blessed is he that watcheth, and keepeth his garments, lest he walk naked, and they see his shame.” Revelation 16:15

“Behold, I come quickly: hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown.” Revelation 3:11

“I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. 16 So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.”  Revelation 3:15-16

We are made “rich” in Christ, full of His virtue and blessedness as we fellowship daily with Him. See Colossians 1-2.

Those who don’t diligently seek the LORD will be made “poor” spiritually.

Are you diligent or are you dying, sinking? There is no neutral ground.

“He that is not with me is against me; and he that gathereth not with me scattereth abroad.” Matthew 12:30

“No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.”  Matthew 6:24

“Who is among you that feareth the LORD, that obeyeth the voice of his servant, that walketh in darkness, and hath no light? let him trust in the name of the LORD, and stay upon his God.” Isaiah 50:10

” … that stirreth up himself to take hold of thee ….” Isaiah 64:7

Satan gladly welcomes back into his kingdom of hell when ….. those once saved “draw back” due to not diligently, vigilantly…

“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:” 1 Peter 5:8

Satan is stalking you, for your eternal soul… for your demise… you are either fighting, diligently fighting the good fight of faith, or you are losing.

There is no neutral place in God you are either presently seeking His holy face or you are backsliding.

“Seek the Lord and his strength, seek his face continually.” 1 Chronicles 16:11

Holy “Violence”

You are in a fight for your eternal soul ….. “For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? ³⁷ Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?” (Mark 8:36-37).

God is calling you to a holy violence…. in the spirit and concerning your own temple; spirit, soul, and body—which if you defile and die in sin, God will cast your eternal soul into hell to suffer “everlasting destruction” (1 Corinthians 6:19-20; 2 Thessalonians 1:7-10).

TODAY, you are either fighting the good fight of faith, or you are losing, you are sinking. And you may never recover ……..if you don’t fight.

“And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force.” Matthew 11:12

“The Good Fight”

“FIGHT the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses.” 1 Timothy 6:12

It’s a “GOOD fight” because we win—if we “fight.”

Beloved disciple of Christ, you are in a war—for your own eternal soul and the eternal souls of others whom God uses you to reach with His Word.

We were born into a fallen world and are choosing to serve the King of kings or the lord sin and death—Satan. It doesn’t matter if we protest because we didn’t ask for this war. Such in no way changes the fact. Those who “fight the good fight” will soon and forever be with our King and His holy Father and the saints of the ages!

“But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.” 1 Corinthians 2:9

Read Revelation 21 – telling your Savior and Father how much you love them, asking Him to kindly increase in your life and bless you to decrease (John 3:30).

“Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. 13 For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.” Philippians 2:12-13

Prayer: Father, in Jesus’ name, may Your holy fear fill my heart always. Please bless this life to be rooted in Christ and bearing fruit to Your eternal glory. In Jesus’ name, amen.
