Abiding

Resting in the LORD – Now and Forever [podcast]

“The sleep of a labouring man is sweet, whether he eat little or much. The abundance of the rich will not suffer him to sleep.” Ecclesiastes 5:12

Those who work hard rest well. This makes one wonder if more activity would cure a whole lot of sleeping problems, right?

“Esau, who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright.” Hebrews 12:16

Those who walk in His peace now will live in His peace for eternity.

Peace is the fruit of the Spirit – and reserved only for those who labor in this life God’s way, working out their own salvation with fear and trembling, remaining in intimate fellowship with Christ, in vital union, crucified with Christ, abiding fruitful. (John 15).

Those who are abiding in Christ are full of His peace. Those who are living in rebellion have unrest, lack of peace, are frustrated, convicted….confused.

“No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.” Matthew 6:24

The Second half of Ecclesiastes 5:12

“The abundance of the rich will not suffer him to sleep.” Ecclesiastes 5:12b

Here in Ecclesiastes 5:12 we see the rich in this life pictured as those who have too much time on their hands and/or that they can’t sleep well due to worry about their riches. They will not rest in eternity.

“And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name.” Revelation 14:11

Laying up treasure on earth vs in Heaven

“Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: 20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: 21 for where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.”  Matthew 6:19-21

The more one has, the more he has to worry about. Liquidating your riches for God’s glory will liquidate your unrest.

Here’s a great passage I’ve prayed for many years before resting, sleeping:

“For God speaketh once, yea twice, yet man perceiveth it not. 15 In a dream, in a vision of thenight, when deep sleep falleth upon men, in upon the bed; 16 Then he openeth the ears of men, and sealeth their instruction, 17 That he may withdraw man from his purpose, and hide pride from man. 18 He keepeth back his soul from the pit, and his life from perishing by the sword.” Job 33:14-18

“He shall enter into peace: they shall rest in their beds, each one walking in his uprightness.” Isaiah 57:2

Only those who live in the peace of “the Prince of Peace” in this life will enjoy it forevermore! (Isaiah 9:6-7)

The first three fruit of the Spirit named in Galatians 5:22-23 are “Love, joy, peace” and such are produced in the hearts and lives of every true born again, presently abiding, ready-to-meet-Jesus disciple.

If you don’t have the peace of God now, you will not have it in eternity. You do not know Him.

It seems clear from Holy Scripture that anyone not walking in the peace of God, is “wicked.”

“There is no peace, saith my God, to the wicked.” Isaiah 57:21

Seek the Lord and his strength, seek his face continually.” 1 Chronicles 16:11

“Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief.”  Hebrews 4:11

“Great peace have they which love thy law: and nothing shall offend them.” Psalms 119:165

When we love God we embrace the cross message our LORD commanded us to walk in.

“Only way to have the peace that passes all understanding. As I lived in much stress and anxiety! And did not have much peace. Since embracing the cross the Lord has lifted that right out of my heart. And given me a deep abiding peace. That can only come from resting in Him. And allowing Jesus to be in control not me! That’s why we stress we try to figure it all out ourselves. Jesus says, ‘Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me, for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.’ Matthew 11:28-29. Bring it all to Jesus and lay it at His feet! He promises to give you rest and comfort for your weary soul.” Karen Cochran

“In all labour there is profit: but the talk of the lips tendeth only to penury.” Proverbs 14:23

“Seek the Lord and his strength, seek his face continually.” 1 Chronicles 16:11

“For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end. 12 Then shall ye call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you. 13 And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart. 14 And I will be found of you, saith the Lord: and I will turn away your captivity, and I will gather you from all the nations, and from all the places whither I have driven you, saith the Lord; and I will bring you again into the place whence I caused you to be carried away captive. 15 Because ye have said, The Lord hath raised us up prophets in Babylon;” Jeremiah 29:11-15

God is not available to the casual seeker.

“If thou seek him, he will be found of thee; but if thou forsake him, he will cast thee off for ever.” 1 Chronicles 28:9

“Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. 13 For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.” Philippians 2:12-13

“Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils … Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses.” 1 Timothy 4:1; 6:12

“Peace” and “safety”

“I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety.” Psalms 4:8

“Strangers and pilgrims on the earth”

“These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.” Hebrews 11:13

Don’t miss Heaven for any of the fleeting riches of this passing world…

“And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.” 1 John 2:17

“Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.”  Matthew 7:21

“But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.  1 Corinthians 2:9

Prayer: LORD, please grant my sleep to be sweet. Speak to my heart! Rebuke my rebellion and pride and grant Your gift of repentance to this wicked heart. Please break me Jesus and bless this Your vessel to be possessed with a humble and contrite heart that is united to fear Thy holy name. In Jesus’ name, amen.
