Simply put, whether physical or imagined (imaged, conjured up in one’s mind) an idol is the figment, the God-less object of one’s sinful, corrupted, defiled, unrepentant, and demented heart and therefore imagination.

“And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. 21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.” John 3:19-21

Man made idols are merely figments of the imagination or physical wooden, stone, plaster of paris, etc. These are inanimate elements created by the ONE you should be worshiping “in spirit and in truth.” (John 4:23-24). How can your “god” help you if you have to create him yourself, prop him up, pump up your psyche, and carry him around? What kind of “god” is that? –A false god!

2nd Commandment: “Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: 5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;” (Exodus 20:4-5)
