Sound Doctrine [podcast]
3 Types of Doctrine in the Bible and the World:
1. “Doctrine of God”, “Sound doctrine” (2 Timothy 3:16; Titus 2:1, 10; 2 John 10-11, etc.).
2. Doctrines of men (Mark 7:6-10).
3. “Doctrines of devils” (1 Timothy 4:1).
“Behold, the days come, saith the Lord GOD, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the LORD: 12 And they shall wander from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east, they shall run to and fro to seek the word of the LORD, and shall not find it.” Amos 8:11-12
The further we burst forth in history toward the return of Christ, the further men “depart from the faith,” from sound doctrine (1 Timothy 4:1-2; 2 Timothy 4:2-4; Jude 3, etc.). This is all the more reason that the true disciple must never depend on other man but rather must diligently and daily devour God’s Word for himself just as we are instructed to do (2 Timothy 2:15).
“Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” 2 Timothy 2:15
As he speaks of “being” as more important than “believing,” Andy Stanley intentionally diminishes aught from the divine imperative placed upon what we believe – sound doctrine. And that divine sound doctrine comes directly, literally from God, from His written Word and not what men tell us or display (Colossians 2:4-10). Andy Stanley is but one example of modern false teachers who openly downplay the importance of being grounded in the final divine authority of sound doctrine and is therefore a vile wolf. See Romans 16:17-18; Jude 3; Titus 2:1, etc. The insidious thing about modern deceivers is that they speak some and even much truth and yet, mix it in with deadly falsehoods.
From the beginning, the LORD taught His people the utter importance of His written Precepts, His statues – and the severe and eternal punishment coming upon anyone who dares changes His words (Deuteronomy 4:1-10; Proverbs 30:5-6; Revelation 22:18-19, etc.).
“Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish ought (take away) from it, that ye may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you.” Deuteronomy 4:2
It only takes 1 small drop of clear arsenic to make a glass of water deadly. And it only takes 1 falsehood to ruin our whole body of truth (the whole of what we believe and embrace). Speaking specifically of the deadly effect of just a “little” false doctrine, Christ’s apostle Paul says:
“A little leaven leaveneth the whole lump.” Galatians 5:9
The word “doctrine” appears 51 times in God’s Word. This alone marks the divine importance placed upon sound doctrine. The true disciple with voraciously study, learning, and live by exactly what GOD Himself says of Himself – on the pages of His written Word (Deuteronomy 4:1-10; 2 Timothy 2:15; 3:16-17; 2 Peter 1:19-21, etc.).
We can only speak the truth into the hearts of men and dispel the opposing arguments if we know the truth so well that the truth is the only thing that flows from our lips (Proverbs 22:17-21; 1 Peter 3:15).
“Bow down thine ear, and hear the words of the wise, and apply thine heart unto my knowledge. 18 For it is a pleasant thing if thou keep them within thee; they shall withal be fitted in thy lips. 19 That thy trust may be in the LORD, I have made known to thee this day, even to thee. 20 Have not I written to thee excellent things in counsels and knowledge, 21 That I might make thee know the certainty of the words of truth; that thou mightest answer the words of truth to them that send unto thee?” Proverbs 22:17-21
“Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all.” 1 Timothy 4:15
We cannot possible properly meditate on a divine truth we haven’t memorized Holy Scripture (Proverbs 4:4).
When we truly get honest with God in repentance, instead of running from truth speakers, we will be looking for them!
In 2 Timothy 4:3 to “endure sound doctrine” means to hold oneself accountable to it. WHAT’s at the root of those who refuse to “endure sound doctrine”? – They simply do not love Jesus like He commanded them to (Matthew 22:37-39). They profess Christ as Savior and yet love self supremely and therefore serve the god of self. The Holy Ghost through Paul told us this of those who have a mere “form of godliness” in the last day resume’ found in 2 Timothy 3:1-7.
Notice by divine design the very first thing he reveals is that “men shall be lovers of their own selves.” All the following evil comes out of self love, refusal to love God supremely and therefore repent, deny self, take up the cross and follow Jesus:
“This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. 2 For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, 3 Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, 4 Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; 5 Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away. 6 For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts, 7 Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.” 2 Timothy 3:1-7
