God’s Peace or Ours?

by Michael Beck

“And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:7)

The peace of God is a precious shield that protects us from consuming worries and fears. It also protects us from resorting to wrong measures to quell our agitation. When things are seemingly un-right or amiss in our world, our heart becomes troubled. No one likes the discomfort of a disquieted soul. We all seek peace of heart. Our lack of peace can drive us in the wrong direction in the quest to find it. But the artificial peace that we drum up for ourselves is not the peace God would give us.

Our peace depends on the world around us being right in our eyes. We have God’s peace when we are right in His eyes. When events in our world would rob us of our peace, it is time to find the peace of God. Instead of running to our own remedy we need to run to God. Yes, He can handle our troubled heart. He speaks peace to His people who are willing to hear from Him and do what’s right in His sight.

Whose peace will we have – God’s or our own? God’s peace will truly guard our heart and mind. It will keep us from many a foolish and hurtful path. Our peace is flimsy. It has no power to withstand life’s anxieties. Forsake your own efforts to find peace apart from real relationship with God. He is our peace.

“But whoso hearkeneth unto me shall dwell safely, and shall be quiet from fear of evil.” Proverbs 1:33

“I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, Lord, only makest me dwell in safety.” Psalms 4:8
