Abiding
He Will Never Leave His Own
“Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. 6 So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me.” Hebrews 13:5-6
This is a beautiful promise claimed by many and yet, there are conditions to God’s promises. His blessings are reserved for those who are truly in Christ. This promise of the LORD’s presence and watch care in our lives is a divine promise to all who are authentically of God – presently in Christ – and not to the tares among us (2 Timothy 4:2-4).
Feeling Isolated and Alone?
When Christ’s apostle Paul was viciously attacked by Alexander the coppersmith, for a time, “no man” – not one man – stood with him. But Jesus was there with Him just like the Son of God was in the fire with the 3 Hebrew children and promised He will be with you to the end!!! (2 Timothy 4:14-18; Daniel 3; Matthew 28:20; Hebrew 13:8)
“lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.” Matthew 28:20
EVER felt alone in Christ? God is good…. Elijah, in a mental lapse, erroneously thought he was the only prophet, the only remaining servant of God left in the land, till the LORD corrected him and assured him that there were 7,000 more!!! Amen Jesus.
“The Great Shepherd of the sheep” – Christ the LORD – knows and will always minister to His people just exactly what they need all the days of their lives on this earth (John 10; Hebrews 13:20). Jesus never fails. Jesus never misses His cue – because He will never “slumber nor sleep.”
“Then spake the Lord to Paul in the night by a vision, Be not afraid, but speak, and hold not thy peace: 10 For I am with thee, and no man shall set on thee to hurt thee: FOR I HAVE MUCH PEOPLE IN THIS CITY. 11 And he continued there a year and six months, teaching the word of God among them.” Acts 18:9-11
Jesus promises that all who truly follow Him will be shunned, slandered, persecuted, and rewarded.
“Blessed are ye, when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you from their company, and shall reproach you, and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of man’s sake. 23 Rejoice ye in that day, and leap for joy: for, behold, your reward is great in heaven: for in the like manner did their fathers unto the prophets.” Luke 6:22-23
Those presently abiding in Christ can ask and receive of God. Those who are currently not in Christ, are heading for eternal fire:
“If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned. 7 If ye abide (remain) in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.” John 15:6-7
When a born again believer is choosing daily to “abide” or remain in Christ – it’s on Christ’s terms and not his own or some false teaching!
The promises of God are only to those who are born again and presently abiding obedient in Christ (John 15).
“For all the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God by us.” 2 Corinthians 1:20
The “in him” is essential in the above verse.
WHO are His own?
Notice here below the condition associated with His promise of being kept.
“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me (present tense): 28 And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. 29 My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand.” John 10:27-29
Any person who was saved in the past and yet isn’t currently walking with – obeying – Jesus, cannot claim Christ’s promise here to be kept by Him.
Christ remains with His own and His own are defined by those who remain with Him – “they follow me (present, continual sense)” (John 10:27).
“The LORD is with you, while ye be with him; and if ye seek him, he will be found of you; but if ye forsake him, he will forsake you.” 2 Chronicles 15:2
“because ye have forsaken the LORD, he hath also forsaken you.” 2 Chronicles 24:20
“If we suffer, we shall also reign with him: if we deny him, he also will deny us:” 2 Timothy 2:12
Does John 10:27-29 Prove “Eternal Security”?
The Promise of the Spirit
John 14:15-17
Jesus said to His disciples (those who were following Him):
“If ye love me, keep my commandments. And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever; Even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.”
Donald Stamps writes concerning this passage:
“14:16 I will pray the Father. Jesus will ask the Father to give the Comforter only to those who are serious about their love for Him and their devotion to His Word. Jesus uses the present tense in v. 15 (If you love me), thus emphasizing a continuing attitude of love and obedience.
“14:16 Comforter. The Spirit will be by the disciples’ side to help and strengthen them (cf. Mat. 14:30-31), to teach the true course for their lives (v. 26), to comfort in difficult situations (v. 18), to intercede in prayer for them (Rom. 8:26-27-27; cf. 8:34), to be a friend to further their best interest (v. 17) and to remain with them forever.”
