The 2 “R”s Jesus Commands Us to Preach [podcast]

“And that REPENTANCE and REMISSION of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.” Luke 24:47

Jesus commands us to preach not only “repentance” but also the “remission of sins.”

YOU are a carrier of the Good News of God’s salvation in Christ!

“Beginning at Jerusalem – This was appointed most graciously and wisely: graciously, as it encouraged the, greatest sinners to repent, when they saw that even the murderers of Christ were not excepted from mercy: and wisely, as hereby Christianity was more abundantly attested; the facts being published first on the very spot where they happened.” John Wesley

“Luke 24:47
Repentance
Remission of sins – Αφεσιν ἁμαρτιων, The taking away – removal of sins, in general every thing that relates to the destruction of the power, the pardoning of the guilt, and the purification of the heart from the very nature of sin should be preached in his name.

In his name – On his authority, and in virtue of the atonement made by him: for on what other ground could the inhabitants of the earth expect remission of sins?

Among all nations – Because God wills the salvation of All; and Jesus Christ by his grace has tasted death for Every man. Heb_2:9.
Beginning at Jerusalem – Making the first overtures of mercy to my murderers! If, then, the sinners of Jerusalem might repent, believe, and be saved, none, on this side hell, need despair.” Adam Clarke

We must repent to be saved.
When we do, God washes us of all our sins!

Perhaps we could all amp up the second part of this verse of truth, this command of our LORD – who is “NOT willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance” (2 Peter 3:9).

Beloved of God, remember these 2 “R”s of the Great Commission:

“And that REPENTANCE and REMISSION of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.” Luke 24:47

WHAT 2 things did Jesus mandate that we preach?

1. “Repentance”
2. “Remission of sins”

Of course people must repent to be forgiven, to have their sins remitted. When they do repent, Jesus is going to wash away all their sins.

The Great Commission, New Testament includes preaching, communicating that “God commandeth ALL men everywhere to repent” and also assuring, informing people, sinners that God will hear their cry to Him and forgive, remit, remove all their sins instantly! (Acts 17:30-31)

“For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” Romans 10:13

The Gospel means the Good News!

Are we truly preaching the whole Gospel or only half of it? Are we informing people of the saving mercy of our LORD Jesus – informing them that as they go to God acknowledging their sin in repentance, that He is going to freely forgive them, washing them from all their sins?

“Then Peter said unto them, REPENT, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the REMISSION OF SINS, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.” Acts 2:38

“REPENT ye therefore, and be converted, THAT YOUR SINS MAY BE BLOTTED OUT, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord;” Acts 3:19

“Him hath God exalted with his right hand to be a Prince and a Saviour, for to give REPENTANCE to Israel, and FORGIVENESS OF SINS.” Acts 5:31

“To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive REMISSION OF SINS.” Acts 10:43

The Divine Invitation

Jesus beckons:

“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30

“Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool. 19 If ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land: 20 But if ye refuse and rebel, ye shall be devoured with the sword: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it.” Isaiah 1:18-20

Balance includes strongly preaching both repentance and also that God is going to remit, remove all the sins of those who repent.

YOUR PRAYER: Holy Father, in Jesus’ name, please teach me Your ways more perfectly. Do Your work in this vessel and please allow the sweet savor of Christ to emanate from this Your disciple. I love You LORD Jesus. Without You I can do nothing. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
