Catholic Conversations-Mary on the Cross [podcast]
Did Mary Die for Our Sins? [podcast]
Blasphemous Antichrist Idolatry: Mary on the Cross
This is demonic. Mary was a sinner (Luke 1:47-48). Mary can’t hear prayers. Mary told you to obey Jesus (John 2:5). Mary didn’t walk on water, raise the dead, open blinded eyes, or die for anyone’s sins. God has spoken to us through His Son, not mary. “God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, 2 Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds; 3 Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;” (Hebrews 1:1-3) Only Jesus can forgive your sins and save you – “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.” (Acts 16:31)
“God wants us to worship Him in spirit and in truth, we walk by faith not by sight. The images Mary etc. are false images as related to God. These false images give us an incorrect impression of the true Jesus Christ, and are, in fact, a part of the devil’s great master deception and should be treated as such. It is not wrong to picture (in our mind’s eye) Jesus Christ in His glorified state as He is today, as John described in Revelation 1:14-16: “His head and his hairs were white like wool, as white as snow; and his eyes were as a flame of fire; 15 And his feet like unto fine brass, as if they burned in a furnace; and his voice as the sound of many waters. 16 And he had in his right hand seven stars: and out of his mouth went a sharp twoedged sword: and his countenance was as the sun shineth in his strength.” (Revelation 1:14-16) God would not have inspired this description unless He wanted us to know Christ’s glorified appearance. Amen. Welcome to the family of God.” Marjorie Banks
Mary on Cross Above Jesus. In catholic theology and art, Mary is always elevated above Jesus Christ. Pure, antichrist Idolatry!
In catholic art, Mary is many times seen OVER Jesus which is consistent with their antichrist doctrines. But God’s Word tells us that Jesus Christ, the Almighty God, needed no help redeeming mankind when He offered His blood on the altar of the cross.
“Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;” Hebrews 1:3
The catholic church perpetrates the heresy that Jesus was a co-mediatrix with Christ. But the Bible tells us:
“For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;” 1 Timothy 2:5
THE CATHOLIC CHURCH TEACHES THAT MARY IS MEDIATRIX/co-redeemer:
Pope John XXIII 1959, stated: “Mary is a SOURCE of SALVATION to the HUMAN RACE, 2003 OUR Sunday Visitor MAY edition. Also, “Mary is the MEDIATRIX of the GRACES that flow from her son’s Redemptive sacrifice.” Pope John Paul II, Cathechism #969 “Mary is the ALL HOLY ONE”. And #2677 “has a saving office and brings forth the gifts of eternal salvation”
Jesus is the only Hope God gave us for forgiveness of sins – Jesus stated: “The Son of man hath power ON EARTH (not in “purgatory”) to forgive sins.” Matthew 9:6
Anyone see Mary in that statement from the Son of God? No.
GOD NOR MARY HERSELF NEVER INSTRUCTED ANYONE TO LOOK TO MARY FOR GRACE OR ANSWERED PRAYER. Jesus told us that He is exclusively the only way to the Father.
“Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” John 14:6
There is no other way to the Father and to Heaven except Jesus Christ.
Mary can save no one. Mary couldn’t save herself. She was a sinner and admitted such when she called God her Savior. Only a sinner needs a Savior. Notice in this prayer the thing Mary stated as she exalted the LORD and not herself. She calls herself a mere “handmaiden” of the Almighty:
“And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord,
47 And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.
48 For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.
49 For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; and holy is his name (not Mary’s).
50 And his mercy is on them that fear him from generation to generation.
51 He hath shewed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.” Luke 1:46-51
Mary admits she’s a sinner when she says “he hath regarded the LOW estate of his handmaiden.” (Luke 1:48) Mary did not exalt herself but rather admitted her own sinful state in these words.
Like all men, Mary was a sinner and a sinner cannot forgive or save a sinner. Only Jesus Christ, the Almighty can do such (Revelation 1:8).
Her use of the words “God my Savior” reveals that mary was a sinner – ONLY a sinner needs a Savior.
GOD THE FATHER GAVE JESUS (not mary, the pope or catholic church) FOR OUR SINS – “FOR GOD SO LOVED THE WORLD THAT HE GAVE HIS ONLY BEGOTTEN SON.” JOHN 3:16
It’s true that the central Theme of all of Scripture is Jesus, and that is precisely the point… the catholic church places emphasis upon mary and this is demonic in that it is causing great idolatry – people’s attention is diverted from Jesus to mary.
Mary was a sinner by her own admission – Luke 1:47 – only a sinner needs a “Savior” – “And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord, 47 And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.” Luke 1:46-47 (KJV)
Of the catholic church,
WP writes:
“What a Travesty that Mary and every Other Saint has a day devoted to Him or Her, yet JESUS Christ falls behind these others in Importance. Especially given JESUS Shed his Blood and Resurrected so we can be Saved.”
No such thing as a catholic who is born again. Stop all justification of this and help them get saved!
Message Received from a Catholic:
I need some convincing. I would love it, if you would please cite a Bible verse or verses saying each of the following:
1) that Mary was NOT conceived immaculately
2) that Mary COMMITTED sin
3) that Mary WAS NOT assumed into heaven
Response:
Immaculate conception or immaculate deception? You have been grossly misled and are therefore basing what you believe on what mere sinful men have told you. The Bible is God’s Word and therefore, the more appropriate questions from His holy Word are:
- Where does the Bible tell us that Mary was immaculately conceived? Nowhere.
- That Mary was somehow not part of the “ALL” whom the Bible says “HAVE sinned.” (Rom. 3:23) “ALL have sinned.” Mary was not sinless. She admitted to the need of a Savior and only sinners need a Savior (Luke 1:47). Then she admits to being a mere handmaiden or servant of the LORD (Luke 1:48). So, Mary told us right there that she was not immaculate or sinless or a co-mediatrix.
- Where does God’s Word ever hint that Mary was “assumed into heaven”? (fairy tale, a mere fable)
Question: WHY DIDN’T MARY HERSELF TELL US SHE WAS SINLESS IF SUCH WERE THE CASE??? Why O Why does Scripture never hint that Mary was sinless? You see, your religion is of the enemy of all souls and he is the enemy of Jesus Christ. So, he has and is directing your affection/attention away from the only One who can save you from your sins and hell – the nail-scarred, risen Savior, Jesus Christ. Only Jesus was sinless. He is unique in all of history and Satan does not want you to know Him.
Mary is never said to be excluded from being a sinner in God’s Word. To elevate Mary to the place of being sinless is nothing less than idolatrous and takes away from the uniqueness of Christ, the only sinless man ever after Adam and Eve before they sinned.
Whose sins did Mary or the Pope ever die for?
What Scriptures in God’s Word tell us that Mary was buried and raised again?
What miracle did Mary ever do?
What water did Mary ever walk on?
Whose blinded eyes did Mary ever open?
What lame person did Mary ever heal?
Did you realize that of the 27 books of the New Testament canon, that Mary is only mentioned in 6 of them? That means that 21 of the 27 books of the New Testament canon don’t even mention Mary once. Why? Because she played a small part in the plan of God as dozens and dozens of others have played throughout history. But there’s only one Mediator between God and man, one Savior of lost souls, one LORD of all lords and King of all kings, and His name is Jesus Christ.
JESUS says: “The thief (Satan) cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.” John 10:10 You have not mentioned Jesus Christ even once, so in this alone we see you are being misled, no matter what feeling you seem to be having. This is pure idolatry.
Catholic Idolatry: Mary on the Cross
WHAT DID MARY HERSELF TELL US TO DO? “His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he (JESUS) saith unto you, do it.” John 2:5
IS MARY YOUR IDOL?
Why does the Catholic church want people looking to Mary instead of Jesus for salvation?
Why is glory stolen from Jesus and given to Mary?
WHY, WHY, WHY is glory stolen from Jesus and given to Mary?
If Mary plays a role in salvation, why didn’t God tell us so in His Word?
Did the Almighty and all-knowing, eternal God forget to tell us something we needed to know? Something important?
Who will you trust to save you? The Mary of church tradition, or the Jesus of God’s Word?
Why does the Catholic church so overemphasize Mary? Diverting attention from the very Son of God?
False prophet Pope Paul VI “constantly worked to increase the worship of Mary.”
WHERE DID JESUS TELL New Testament CHRISTIANS TO HONOR MARY?? – CHAPTER AND VERSE PLEASE.
WHERE DID THE BIBLE EVER SAY MARY WAS A PERPETUAL VIRGIN? IMPOSSIBLE. SHE WAS ONLY A VIRGIN TILL JESUS WAS BORN. SHE HAD AT LEAST 6 KIDS AFTER Jesus – IN MARK 6:3 THEY ARE NAMED.
As Usual, in Catholic Paganism, Mary is Lifted Above the Only Savior and LORD.
THERE IS NOT ONE VERSE IN THE BIBLE THAT INSTRUCTS NEW TESTAMENT CHRISTIANS TO LOOK TO MARY TO PRAY FOR THEM OR BE A SOURCE OF ANY KIND TO THEM: There is not one hint of such in any verse of Holy Scripture. Did the Almighty and all-knowing, eternal God forget to tell us something we needed to know? Something important?
Who will you trust to save you? The Mary of Catholic tradition, or the Jesus of God’s Word?
Did the Son of God lie to us? Is He not the only “WAY” to the Father and to Heaven instead of eternal hell? If He is, that means Mary, the Pope, and the Catholic church have nothing to do with salvation and will only damn your soul to hell (there is no purgatory). Who will you believe? Jesus “I am THE WAY … NO MAN cometh to the Father but by ME.” (John 14:6)
Catholics will profusely argue that their religion doesn’t worship Mary, yet its theology and art work and the billions of dollars spent on statues of Mary prove otherwise.
The Catholic church and its pagan teachings are the most diabolical, antichrist system ever known to mankind. God describes in detail and tells us that He will destroy this wickedness in “one hour.” (Revelation 17-18)
Make no mistake: The WHOLE Catholic system is an antichrist system designed by Satan himself to misdirect the heart affections of the masses AWAY FROM the ONE who bled to save them on that cross. Jesus Christ alone can save. Mary was only a woman, a sinner.
There’s only ONE that can save from sin and eternal damnation and that’s Jesus Christ, the Son of God who died on that cross one time to pay the full price for the sins of all men. The Father spoke several times from Heaven telling us all of Jesus that “THIS is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased.” (Matthew 3:17, etc.) God never said anything about being pleased in any other sinful person because only Jesus was sinless, divine, and qualified to pay the price for the sins of mankind. No one can or will be saved from sin and hell outside of repenting and putting their full faith in Jesus Christ who bled to redeem their wicked souls.
Romans 5
“For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.
7For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die.
8But God commendeth (displayed) his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
9Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.
10For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.”
If you die trusting the Catholic church, Mary, or the Pope, as sure as you are reading these words you will spend eternity in the lake of fire with no possibility of escaping. The Bible tells us that only those who call upon the name of the LORD will be saved. It’s only through Jesus Christ that you can be saved, not through a religion of mere sinful men who have no authority in the eyes of Heaven.
“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. 11For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. 12For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. 13For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” Romans 10:9-13
—- AS a previously lifetime Catholic, upon truly being saved, my heart immediately knew that that system was of Satan. I like much of what David Wilkerson says but I do not agree with there being such a thing as saved Catholics because the Bible says “Ye cannot drink of the cup of the LORD and the cup of devils.” (1 Corinthians 10:21)… ALL idolaters shall have their part in the lake of fire (Revelation 21:8, 27, etc.)…. in my opinion, if they had truly repented and gotten saved, they would have come out immediately….. Beware of this delusion friends….. any Catholic who truly repents and gets saved will immediately depart from that blasphemous darkness ….
The Catholic church can be summed up in one word – idolatry. The LORD’s very first commandment to us is “Thou shalt have NO other gods before me.” (Exodus 20:3-4)
—- CAN A TRUE BELIEVER IN JESUS CHRIST REMAIN IN THE CATHOLIC CHURCH? No true born again Christian would remain serving devils or amidst unrepentant devils. What does 1 Cor 10:21 say? No truly born again disciple of Jesus can continue fellowshipping with idols and devils and remain in Christ … “Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?” 2 Cor. 6:14 …
To say that a true Christian can remain Catholic is mixture and hogwash … To say such is to basically say that someone can truly be born again and also be simultaneously walking in complete darkness and not being led of the Spirit of God which would in every case lead them out of that antichrist cult (RCC) … The Bible states: “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.” Rom. 8:14
— ETERNALLY long live the final authority of God’s Word. In fact the very reason God gave us His Word in written form is so we wouldn’t be scammed by false prophet religions like this one. “Let God be true and EVERY man a liar.” (Romans 3:4) Is this phony “pope” a mere man? Of course. Hiding behind the sham of a long robe makes this phony antichrist sham no less a sinful mere man and a false prophet at that. The catholic church has no authority at all except in the minds of the deceived who do not know the LORD Jesus Christ. The Catholic church has nothing to do with Christ’s true church (called-out, born again people). The whole thing is false, regardless of whether it’s below or above ground. This Catholic church is all fictitious actually. It’s a fraud, a counterfeit. made up by sinful men to control the masses. They even call it “mass” when they call the cattle to come eat more poison. There is no such thing as a “pope” in the New Testament church. Peter himself never claimed to be such and was not called such until 3-4 centuries after he died as did the other apostles. No such office of a “pope” in word or concept is once named in God’s Word. Besides, God alone determines and has declared and had recorded what is right or wrong. Some old man in a costume sitting in Rome has no bearing on what is right and wrong other than in the minds of those deceived enough to think he does. Read 1 Timothy 2:5; 2 Timothy 3:16. God’s written Word is the final authority. Get a King James Bible and trash the idols.
Carmen Kuit-McGregor writes: “Truth is Gods Word in His Holy book the Bible. RCC worships and makes Mary Co-redemptrix, Idol worship, going to Pope and priests instead of Jesus Christ directly for confession of sins plus many more. God’s ordained “hierarchy” is God-> Jesus Christ ->man-> woman. When I became born again this was the first truth the Holy Spirit gave me through His Spirit of truth that Roman Catholic church is counterfeit Christianity. When you look into history and compare teachings with the Bible you will see His truth.”

“Fervent in Spirit” [podcast]
“Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord;” Romans 12:11
Concerning being “fervent in spirit,” one commentator notes that this means to:
“Maintain zeal to the boiling point.” Dake
“Fervent” – A primary verb; to be hot (boil, of liquids; or glow, of solids), that is, (figuratively) be fervid (earnest): – be fervent.
“Do nothing at any time but what is to the glory of God, and do every thing as unto him; and in every thing let your hearts be engaged.” Adam Clarke
“Never let your zeal flag (lag, drop, tank), maintain the spiritual glow, serve the Lord.” Here we are reminded of the words of Jeremiah 48:10: ‘Cursed be he that doeth the work of the LORD deceitfully,'” Believer’s Bible Commentary
Apollos was “fervent in the spirit.”
“This man was instructed in the way of the Lord; and being FERVENT in the spirit, he spake and taught diligently the things of the Lord, knowing only the baptism of John.” Acts 18:25
In all things Christ’s saints are to be “fervent in spirit”:
“Not slothful in business; FERVENT in spirit; serving the Lord;” Romans 12:11
Disciples of Jesus are to have a “fervent mind” toward all saints and ministers of His blessed Gospel:
“And not by his coming only, but by the consolation wherewith he was comforted in you, when he told us your earnest desire, your mourning, your FERVENT mind toward me; so that I rejoiced the more.” 2 Corinthians 7:7
“Fervent prayer” is to be offered to God for other of His saints:
“Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual FERVENT prayer of a righteous man availeth much.” James_5:16
Jesus’ people are to have “fervent charity among” ourselves:
“And above all things have FERVENT charity among yourselves: for charity shall cover the multitude of sins.” 1 Peter 4:8
“Fervent heat” will soon consume the wicked who refused the salvation that comes from Christ alone:
“But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with FERVENT heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.” 2 Peter 3:10
“Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with FERVENT heat.” 2 Peter 3:12
On this biblical topic of fervency, of being “fervent in spirit”, one commentary offers the following:
“2 Peter 3:
To be ‘fervent in spirit’ means to have intense, burning passion, zeal, and enthusiasm for spiritual matters, often linked to serving God, rather than being lukewarm or apathetic. It implies being ‘boiled’ with spiritual energy, actively engaged, and diligent in faith, as described in Romans 12:11, (‘not slothful in business, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord’). It’s a passionate, fiery commitment, distinct from fanaticism, involving earnest application and a deep love for God.
Key aspects:
- Intensity: A deep, glowing, or boiling heat of emotion and dedication.
- Diligence: Not being lazy or half-hearted, but actively applying oneself to spiritual duties.
- Spiritual Zeal: A strong desire and excitement for God’s will, the Gospel, and spiritual growth.
- Source: Often described as being moved by the Holy Spirit, a fire within.
- Biblical Example: Apollos was described as ‘fervent in the spirit’ as he taught diligently about the Lord (Acts 18:25).
- Passionate prayer
- Diligent study of God’s Word
- Active, loving service to others
- Bold witnessing for faith
- Being ‘on fire’ for God, not lukewarm”
Jesus says that those in His church who are “lukewarm” will be spued or rejected (Revelation 3:15-16). What’s the opposite of being “lukewarm”? – being “fervent in spirit.”
“Amen! Don’t let your fire die as the church in Laodicea did! They were neither cold nor hot. They were lukewarm. Comfortable! Indifferent! Their fire for the Lord had gone out. God’s not looking for people who play it safe but people who burn with fire for Him!!!” Karen Cochran
YOUR PRAYER: LORD, make me Yours. Please keep me close to You, NO MATTER what it takes. Break me dear LORD. Let the holy light of Your presence permeate and shine through my inner man. I am Your temple Jesus. Shine Your light on all darkness. I love You my LORD. In Jesus’ name.

It’s not all Going to be Pretty [podcast]
“Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.” 2 Timothy 2:3
One of Paul’s resumes of the sufferings he endured as an apostle of Jesus Christ.
2 Corinthians 6:3-10
“3 Giving no offence in any thing, that the ministry be not blamed:
4 But in all things approving ourselves as the ministers of God, in much patience, in afflictions, in necessities, in distresses,
5 In stripes, in imprisonments, in tumults, in labours, in watchings, in fastings;
6 By pureness, by knowledge, by longsuffering, by kindness, by the Holy Ghost, by love unfeigned,
7 By the word of truth, by the power of God, by the armour of righteousness on the right hand and on the left,
8 By honour and dishonour, by evil report and good report: as deceivers, and yet true;
9 As unknown, and yet well known; as dying, and, behold, we live; as chastened, and not killed;
10 As sorrowful, yet alway rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing all things.”
You are His. Cling to Him. The LORD Jesus is going to bring you through, not matter what you face (Deuteronomy 13:4).
“But now thus saith the LORD that created thee, O Jacob, and he that formed thee, O Israel, Fear not: for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name; thou art mine. 2 When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.” Isaiah 43:1-2
“Hated”
“And ye shall be hated of all men for my name’s sake: but he that endureth to the end shall be saved.” Matthew 10:22
“Ye shall Laugh”
“And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said, Blessed be ye poor: for yours is the kingdom of God. 21 Blessed are ye that hunger now: for ye shall be filled. Blessed are ye that weep now: for ye shall laugh. 22 Blessed are ye, when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you from their company, and shall reproach you, and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of man’s sake.” Luke 6:20-22
“Through much Tribulation”
“Confirming the souls of the disciples, and exhorting them to continue in the faith, and that we must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God.” Acts 14:22
Eternity with Christ, “with Joy”
“For ye shall go out with joy, and be led forth with peace: the mountains and the hills shall break forth before you into singing, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands.” Isaiah 55:12
“To Make them White”
“And such as do wickedly against the covenant shall he corrupt by flatteries: but the people that do know their God shall be strong, and do exploits. 33 And they that understand among the people shall instruct many: yet they shall fall by the sword, and by flame, by captivity, and by spoil, many days. 34 Now when they shall fall, they shall be holpen with a little help: but many shall cleave to them with flatteries. 35 And some of them of understanding shall fall, to try them, and to purge, and to make them white, even to the time of the end: because it is yet for a time appointed.” Daniel 11:32-35
“Made white … the wise shall understand”
“Many shall be purified, and made white, and tried; but the wicked shall do wickedly: and none of the wicked shall understand; but the wise shall understand.” Daniel 12:10

7 Sayings of Jesus on the Cross [podcast]
What Final Statements Did Jesus Make on the Cross and What Did They Mean?
Our LORD Jesus Christ said 7 things while as He was offering His body and precious, sinless blood to buy us back to God. He was suffering for the sins of mankind and for no sin of His own (2 Corinthians 5:21; Hebrews 7:26; 1 Peter 3:18). He was shedding His blood to Re-deem (buy us back) and that’s what Jesus did for “the whole world” when He died on the cross, was buried, and raised again from the dead (1 Corinthians 15:1-4; 1 John 2:2). Do you know Him?
1. “My God, My God, Why hast thou forsaken me” (Matt. 27:46; Mk. 15:34; Ps. 22:1).
This concerned those who hung Him on the cross and how He became the sin bearer, the sin sacrifice and how the Father could not look on sin, so temporarily turned His head. Jesus was forsaken so that we might be forgiven (Isaiah 53).
Application to us: Job 19:6-10; Psalms 139:8; 2 Corinthians 12:7-12; Hebrews 13:5-6
2. “Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do” (Lk. 23:34).
He asked the Father to forgive them – a token of what His shed blood would pay for and facilitate – forgiveness of sin for all who come to Him on His terms to be saved. The sacrificial death of the Son of God satisfied the claims of the Father’s justice to justify mankind (Isaiah 53:11).
Application to us: As God forgave us due to Christ’s perfect sacrifice, He mandates, without exception, that we freely forgive all others, from our hearts. Matthew 5:44; 18:21-35; Mark 11:25-26; Ezekiel 36:24-26; Ephesians 4:32; Colossians 3:12-14
3. “Verily, I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise” (Lk. 23:43).
This promise of forgiveness and eternal comfort given to the thief who believed on Christ in his final moments is the same promise for all who come to Him and are saved (John 6:47).
Application to us: Immediate glory, comfort, and bliss with our LORD at the moment of death. Luke 16:19-31; 2 Corinthians 5:6-8; Philippians 1:21-23; 1 Corinthians 2:9; Revelation 21:4; Luke 21:28
4. “Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit” (Lk. 23:46).
Jesus closes with the prophetic words of Psalm 31:5, speaking to the Father. We see His complete trust in the Father (John 5:30, etc.). Jesus entered death in the same way He lived each day of His life on earth, offering up His life as the perfect sacrifice and placing Himself into the Father’s hands (Luke 22:42).
Application to us: This is a great prayer! Stephen emulated his Savior when being stoned to death for Christ (Acts 7:51-60). “Commend” means to submit. Personally I find these words, while in prayer, rolling off my lips – submitting afresh, daily, and asking the LORD to take full control.
5. “Woman, behold thy son … Behold thy mother” (Jn. 19:26-27).
Jesus, looking down from the cross, was still filled with the concerns of a son for the earthly needs of his mother. None of his half brothers or sisters were there to care for her, so He gave this task to the apostle John (Mark 6:3). Here we see Christ’s humanity.
Application to us: We must take care of earthly responsibilities according to the counsel of the written Word of our God (Psalms 119; 2 Timothy 3:16-17).
6. “I thirst” (Jn. 19:28)
Jesus refused the initial drink of vinegar, gall, and myrrh offered to alleviate his suffering (Matthew 27:34 and Mark 15:23). But here, several hours later, we see Jesus fulfilling the messianic prophecy found in Psalm 69:21. By saying He was thirsty, Jesus prompted the Roman guards to give Him vinegar, which was customary at a crucifixion, thereby fulfilling the prophecy which showed that everything was happening according to God’s plan.
Application to us: We must endure hardness, bitter sufferings and seasons (Acts 14:22; 2 Timothy 2:3; James 1:2-4, 12, etc.).
7. “It is finished” (Jn. 19:30).
This means “paid in full.” The sin debt for all was fully satisfied in the sacrifice of our LORD Jesus Christ, the ultimate price was paid to satisfy the claims of the Father’s justice to redeem fallen mankind (Isaiah 53:11). He is “the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world” (John 1:29).
Application to us: Jesus accomplished our salvation single handedly, satisfying the claims of divine justice to redeem fallen mankind. He died to abolish law-keeping for righteousness and so we must “walk by faith and not by sight.” (2 Corinthians 5:7; Romans 10:4; Colossians 2:14-19; Hebrews, etc.) Read Romans 3-5; Galatians.
