Genesis 3 is both the literal and microcosmic story of the fall of mankind and Christ’s redemption! Thereafter, the whole of Scripture unfolds this story of redemption by way of what we call “the scarlet thread” of redemption which begins in Genesis and culminates in Revelation. Genesis 3 is the quintessential imperative to your understanding of the whole Bible.| Redemption Through Christ’s Sacrifice
“YE SHALL NOT SURELY DIE (Gen 3:4): One of the basic sins of humankind is unbelief in God’s Word. It is believing that somehow God does not really mean what He says about salvation, righteousness, sin, judgment, and death. Satan’s most persistent lie is that unrepentant, deliberate sin and rebellion against God will not necessarily bring separation from God and eternal condemnation (see 1 Cor 6:9; Gal 5:19-21; 1 Jn 1:4).” Donald Stamps, Life in the Spirit Study Bible, P. 11
As he does today, Satan cast doubt on God’s Word – “Yea, hath God said…?” (Genesis 3:1)
“‘YE SHALL BE AS GODS’ (Gen 3:5): Satan, from the beginning of the human race, has tempted humans to believe that they can be like God and decided for themselves what is good and what is evil. (1) Humanity, in seeking to be ‘as gods,’ become independent from God Almighty and as such become false gods (see Gen 3:22; John 10:34). Humans now seek to derive moral knowledge and ethical discernment from their own minds and desire independence from God’s Word. Nevertheless, only God has the right to determine what is good and evil. (2) The Scripture declares that all who seek to be gods ‘shall perish from the earth, from under these heavens’ (Jer 10:10-11). This will likewise be the fate of the antichrist, who will claim ‘that he is God’ (2 Thess 2:4).” Donald Stamps, Life in the Spirit Study Bible, p. 11
The cunning serpent questioned what God said/His Word to us. Today, the Bible informs us that having no new tricks, Satan uses the same tricks he used to cause mankind to fall from grace (1 Corinthians 10:12; 2 Corinthians 2:11). The enemy of souls casts doubt on what God has stated in His holy Word. This is why it is essential that the true follower of Christ declare with Paul: “Let God be true and EVERY man a liar.” (Romans 3:4)
Our own beliefs mean nothing. God’s Word is final authority (Psalms 119:89, 104, 128; 2 Timothy 3:16-17, etc.).
God’s Word and adhering to it is our only protection.
“Every word of God is pure: he is a shield (protection, safeguard) unto them that put their trust in him. 6 Add thou not unto his words, lest he reprove thee, and thou be found a liar.” Proverbs 30:5-6
We are commanded not to believe every person or word we hear but rather to test all things against the holy standard, the written Word:
“Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.” 1 John 4:1
The temptation Satan daily brings is for us to be independent from God – to listen to and do what he whispers into our ears and that coming from his human agents who pose as Christ’s servants while subverting His Word. For example, we know that those who teach OSAS/eternal security are Satan’s servants. We know this because Satan originated this teaching when he told the first man and woman “ye shall not surely die” – which is the same doctrine/lie as the un-conditional eternal security lie preached by false prophets today.
Who will You Believe and Obey?
The True Believer doesn’t live by what others believe God has shown them. No, rather the true disciple of Christ lives by the final authority of the written word of God.
It’s the moral cowards who love the devils who teach OSAS (once saved always saved).
As we will see in the next verses, Satan is the originator of the OSAS message (V4). This is the exact message, temptation, that led to the fall of mankind.
v5 Satan judged God’s motive – “For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.” (Genesis 3:5) In other words, “You will be self-sufficient like God and therefore won’t need God but will rather be able to be independent of your Maker.” Truth: God is the only being in the Universe who is self-sufficient while all others – all of His created beings – are fully dependent upon Him, the Almighty.
v6 – Eve took the power to choose into her own hands. Only God is to reserve such a place and He has stated what is right and wrong. As we also are tempted to do daily, Adam and Eve turned from the Word of God to their own desire. “And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.” (Genesis 3:6)
v7 – Sin brought guilt and shame to mankind. Satan told the man and woman that they could gain knowledge through disobedience thus robbing them of their relationship with their Maker. “And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.” (Genesis 3:7) The “fig leaves” were a vain attempt by Adam and Eve to cover for their sin or redeem themselves. It was not accepted of God and so He shed the blood, of an animal to atone for their sin, prefiguring Christ’s coming sacrifice. “Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them.” (Genesis 3:21)
v8,9 – Adam and Eve now hiding from the LORD he previously worshiped. “And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden.” (Genesis 3:8) Adam and Eve removed themselves from under God’s knowledge of what is right and wrong, thus being separated from Him, losing the benefits of an abiding relationship with their Maker which require faith and obedience to His Word instead of Satan’s and their own whims. He protects His children only as they adhere to Him, to His Word (Joshua 1:8; Psalms 91; John 15:7, etc.).
v12 – The original Blame Game: After the fall Adam then accused God (v5, 12) “And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat.” (Genesis 3:12)
v13 – Then Eve blamed the serpent: “And the LORD God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat.” (Genesis 3:13)
“The Root of the Matter is in Me”! (Job 19:28) JOB new who we should blame! Do you know who to blame? The Root of the Matter!
The Curse of Sin
God is good….. because of who HE is and in spite of us…. The real score ;) Please pour over Romans 7. Oh and John 15:5.
As a result of man’s disobedience and the subsequent fall – separation from God, there were curses pronounced upon …
- Satan (v14)
- Woman (v16)
- Man (v17)
These curses replaced God’s blessings upon His creation and were not His original intent.
Soon as mankind fell by sin, the LORD prophesied the coming of Christ, the first Messianic prophecy in all the Bible:
“And I will put enmity (eternal hatred) between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed (among women, only the virgin Mary would have seed-the eternal Word/Jesus by way of the Holy Spirit); it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.” Genesis 3:15
The Devil would temporarily wound Christ while Christ would arrange the permanent wound of Satan!
“And the God of peace shall bruise Satan under your feet shortly. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen.” Romans 16:20
All curses cured in Christ alone – in Him and His return! Revelation 21-22
“And there shall be no more curse: but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it (Christ will replace all curses); and his servants shall serve him: 4 And they shall see his face; and his name shall be in their foreheads. 5 And there shall be no night there; and they need no candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light: and they shall reign for ever and ever.” Revelation 22:3-5
v22-24 – After the fall… For now God is keeping man from the Garden/Tree of life for now: “And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever: 23 Therefore the LORD God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken. 24 So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.” (Genesis 3:22-24)
“Tree of life” restored in the millennial reign of Christ: “And he shewed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb. 2 In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.” Revelation 22:1-2
It is interesting that the Bible begins in a garden and ends in a city.
Rightly dividing: Judging someone unduly and preaching the judgment of God are 2 different things. When we simply communicate God’s Word, men will be brought by Him into conviction because He loves them and seeks to save them (Luke 19:10). Even Jesus says He did not come to judge/condemn (John 12:47-48) …. From the fall forward, mankind was fallen and already under judgment – That’s why Jesus said He did not come to condemn but rather to give the solution He alone could give and save the world (John 3:17). Then Jesus came to save all men out of that condemnation (John 3:16-18)!
“God does not judge as a law court judge judges. God’s judgment is to take the judgment we were already under. Then it is our decision about what he did for us, not His decision about us.” Travis Bryan III
The purposed creation was the act of an all-knowing (omniscient), all-wise, loving God, and was therefore not an accident or random occurrence. Man is separated by sin from the LORD who is “Holy, holy, holy” and restored to Him via His one, blood sacrifice, the perfect sacrifice of Christ (Romans 5:9; Colossians 1:12-14, 20; Hebrews 9:14; 10:19-21, etc).
Ben Bush Sr. writes: “If we are honest, that is the only thing we can see. ‘The way, the truth, and the life” is more than a thought; He is the very essence of life itself! He is supreme . . . we are nothing in comparison, and all dependent on His grace and mercy! To Him be the glory and honor!”
As was the case with the first man and woman, it is when we look away from the LORD, choosing to become, to act independent of our Maker, that we fall.
“Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man: 14 But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. 15 Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death. 16 Do not err, my beloved brethren. 17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.” James 1:13-17
God owns “ALL souls” who each and every one accountable to their Maker. Like Adam and Eve the LORD has chosen to grant us free will – to serve Him according to His prescription, or to rebel:
“Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die. … But when the righteous turneth away from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity, and doeth according to all the abominations that the wicked man doeth, shall he live? All his righteousness that he hath done shall not be mentioned: in his trespass that he hath trespassed, and in his sin that he hath sinned, in them shall he die. 25 Yet ye say, The way of the Lord is not equal. Hear now, O house of Israel; Is not my way equal? are not your ways unequal? 26 When a righteous man turneth away from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity, and dieth in them; for his iniquity that he hath done shall he die. 27 Again, when the wicked man turneth away from his wickedness that he hath committed, and doeth that which is lawful and right, he shall save his soul alive. 28 Because he considereth, and turneth away from all his transgressions that he hath committed, he shall surely live, he shall not die. 29 Yet saith the house of Israel, The way of the Lord is not equal. O house of Israel, are not my ways equal? are not your ways unequal? 30 Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, every one according to his ways, saith the Lord GOD. Repent, and turn yourselves from all your transgressions; so iniquity shall not be your ruin. 31 Cast away from you all your transgressions, whereby ye have transgressed; and make you a new heart and a new spirit: for why will ye die, O house of Israel? 32 For I have no pleasure in the death of him that dieth, saith the Lord GOD: wherefore turn yourselves, and live ye.” Ezekiel 18:24-32
As was the case for Adam and Eve, so is it for us: “The wages of sin is death” and sin is never from God and always a choice, done by the individual and not the LORD who is “Holy, holy, holy.” (Isaiah 6:3; Revelation 4:8) Here’s a passage to take heed to and memorize:
“Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man: 14 But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. 15 Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.” James 1:13-15
Leaving Christ for ANYTHING is the choice of self-idolatry and is soul damning.
“Thou shalt have no other gods before me.” Exodus 20:3
The man and woman in the Garden chose themselves over their Creator and so are we prone to do.
Forgiveness of this and all sin comes when and if one truly repents and confesses all sin, otherwise they remain separated from the LORD.
“Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.” 2 Corinthians 7:1
Read Ezekiel 18:24-30.
Are you going to go by what you think or by what God’s Word say? Will you obey what temporarily pleases self or walk in God’s wisdom, obeying His Word?
“Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck; write them upon the table of thine heart: 4 So shalt thou find favour and good understanding in the sight of God and man. 5 Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. 6 In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. 7 Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil.” Proverbs 3:3-7
“Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.” 1 John 4:1
“Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.” Matthew 7:15
Not even the Apostle Paul was exempt from being cross examined. The Bereans tested him! Here is our example saints:
“And the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night unto Berea: who coming thither went into the synagogue of the Jews. 11 These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.” Acts 17:10-11
Satan’s children who teach his first “doctrine of devils,” un-conditional eternal security, are plentiful in our day (1 Timothy 4:1-2). The OSAS dupes have created a false god in their own unrepentant wicked imagination. Like Adam and Eve, instead of reading and heeding God’s Word, they craft a false god that panders to their own wickedness. They do not want to allow God to speak for Himself because they do not like what He who is perfectly just, equal, and holy has to say. These are those who love self supremely instead of the Savior. Idolaters. Read Ezekiel 18:24-30.
“But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.” James 1:22
“A careful study of the entire Word of God and Scripture memory are the best powerful discipline that puts God’s living Word into our minds and gives Him the opportunity to change our thinking and reverse our views and to keep us from choosing the opinion of others that contradicts to His Word.” Rich Brown
