Is Loving God Enough? Must We Fear Him? [podcast]

Often, I’ve heard seminarians and modern “Christians” reject the biblical concept, the divine command to fear God.

Both loving God and fearing God are divine commands (Ecclesiastes 12:13; Matthew 22:37-39; Luke 12:4-5, etc.).

Yet we must ask: Is loving God enough? Is loving the LORD all we need to do? Will saying we love God keep you out of sin? It’s a nice platitude, yet this is false humility. Trite. Holiness by way of the fear of the Lord is an essential to remaining, abiding in Christ.

May God instill in the depth of our being His holy fear – that we might love and know and seek our LORD all the days of our lives.

Self-Deception: You and I are no match for sin. Let’s not kid ourselves. There’s going to come a time when temptation rages and you’re going to drop your guard because you believe the lie that you are un-conditionally eternal secure and that sinning won’t separate you from Him who is “Holy, holy, holy.” (Isaiah 6:3; Revelation 4:8) Is that not exactly what happened to Adam and Eve and to millions in history who once knew God?

When a man fears the LORD, he will fear no man. Memorize Galatians 1:10.

“For do I now persuade men, or God? or do I seek to please men? for if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ.” Galatians 1:10

Counterfeits invent ways to excuse themselves from accountability to Scripture. Though they regularly and selectively refer to and read the Old Testament Scriptures, when you quote or read them Holy Scripture from the Old Testament to expose OSAS, they will scream “but that’s Old Testament!” Nice try. But “ALL scripture” is given to New Testament saints and we are told that we are taught by those very Scriptures (2 Timothy 3:17; Romans 15;4; 1 Corinthians 10:11). Also, this same truth as is taught in the passage below, is also taught and confirmed all over the New Testament and from Genesis to Revelation.

“Say unto them, As I live, saith the Lord GOD, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but that the wicked turn from his way and live: turn ye, turn ye from your evil ways; for why will ye die, O house of Israel? 12 Therefore, thou son of man, say unto the children of thy people, The righteousness of the righteous shall not deliver him in the day of his transgression: as for the wickedness of the wicked, he shall not fall thereby in the day that he turneth from his wickedness; neither shall the righteous be able to live for his righteousness in the day that he sinneth. 13 When I shall say to the righteous, that he shall surely live; if he trust to his own righteousness, and commit iniquity, all his righteousnesses shall not be remembered; but for his iniquity that he hath committed, he shall die for it.” Ezekiel 33:11-13

FEARING THE LORD is a DIVINE COMMAND AND CHOICE

“For that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the Lord:” Proverbs 1:29

God commands all men to fear Him. Any person who claims he just wants to love God and not fear Him, is exposed as a rebel – someone who is lawless, doing things on their own terms. “Depart from me ye cursed into everlasting fire” is what’s coming their way! (Matthew 25:41)

Anyone who desires absolute boldness in Christ, a deep “confidence” emanating out of a heart that is truly abiding in Christ, pray for it now (Proverbs 14:26). Just ask God as you submit your life to the nail scarred risen Savior afresh! “ASK, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full.” (John 16:24) Ask Him to unite your heart to fear His name (Psalms 86:11).

“Teach me thy way, O LORD; I will walk in thy truth: unite my heart to fear thy name.” Psalms 86:11

The LORD Himself inspired the above prayer in the psalmist. It’s His will for each of His children. Ask Him.

It is GOD Himself who puts His fear in our hearts. Read these verses below closely and pray that the LORD will instill His fear deep in your being.

Jeremiah 32:39-40
And I will give them one heart, and one way, that they may fear me for ever, for the good of them, and of their children after them:
40 And I will make an everlasting covenant with them, that I will not turn away from them, to do them good; but I WILL PUT MY FEAR IN THEIR HEARTS, that they shall not depart from me
