Powerful Examples of God Answering the Prayers of the Desperate [podcast]
“I sought the LORD, and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears. … 6 This poor man cried, and the LORD heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles … The eyes of the LORD are upon the righteous, and his ears are open unto their cry. 16 The face of the LORD is against them that do evil, to cut off the remembrance of them from the earth. 17 The righteous cry, and the LORD heareth, and delivereth them out of all their troubles. 18 The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit. 19 Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the LORD delivereth him out of them all.” Psalms 34:4, 6, 15-19
“The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.” Psalms 51:17
Of our Prayers of desperation and how God answers….
“Desperate and soul-stirring prayers result in answers. When God is sought in desperation, He responds.” Jim Cymbala
Can we live there? Yes.
“Blessed are the poor (desperate) in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” Matthew 5:3
What’s the difference between praying while “poor in spirit,” desperate for God, and lukewarm, right?
“I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. 16 So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth. 17 Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked: 18 I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see. 19 As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.” Revelation 3:15-19
If we can’t make up our mind about Him, He makes up His mind about us – and exits us (Rev 2:4-5).
“But to this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and trembleth at my word.” Isaiah 66:2
“For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to shew himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him.” 2 Chronicles 16:9
“And it shall come to pass at that time, that I will search Jerusalem with candles, and punish the men that are settled on their lees: that say in their heart, The LORD will not do good, neither will he do evil.” Zephaniah 1:12
“Woe to them that are at ease in Zion, and trust in the mountain of Samaria, which are named chief of the nations, to whom the house of Israel came!” Amos 6:1
Seven Examples of God Answering the Prayer of the Desperate
- Moses and the children of Israel at the Red Sea Exodus 12-14
- Jonah
- Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane
- Paul and Silas Acts 16
- The saints who prayed for Peter Acts 12
- Man lost in the forest
- Man who crashed his plane in a remote forest
“The waters compassed me about, even to the soul: the depth closed me round about, the weeds were wrapped about my head … my prayer came in unto thee, into thine holy temple … And the LORD spake unto the fish, and it vomited out Jonah upon the dry land.” Jonah 2:5, 7, 10
“It seems to mean, my case was as hopeless as that of a man wrapt about with weeds in the depth of the sea.” John Wesley
Ever heard the phrase “he’s in the weeds”?
What does it mean to be in the weeds? In the weeds is an idiomatic phrase concerning being overwhelmed or intensely focused on a current problem or situation, lost in or entangled in tribulation.
Another source uses examples of being in peril, “in the weeds”:
- “We’re down in the weeds here with customer service.”
- “The cooks were so deep in the weeds, they were threatening to walk out.”
Recently, I saw a man interviewed who’d been lost in the wilderness for five days. Put yourself in his place. Five whole days lost in the wilderness with no food or water. When asked how he did it, he said he prayed. Now, do we think his prayers were lame, lukewarm? Was he yawning? No, we know his prayers to God were fervent, were on fire. We know he was crying out from the depths of his being to the LORD, just as Jonah did from deep inside that large fish.
Many years ago, I remember listening to a man giving an astounding testimony of how he, a pilot, crashed in his small plane into a thick forrest. His small plane hit the tops of the trees and then the ground and his body was greatly injured. It was nighttime and he was in the fight of his life to survive….
“I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the LORD.” Psalms 118:17
“But I will put my fear in their hearts, that they shall not depart from me.” Jeremiah 32:40
“The fear of the LORD is a fountain of life, to depart from the snares of death.” Proverbs 14:27
“He will bless them that fear the LORD, both small and great.” Psalms 115:13
Prayer: Dear heavenly Father, grant my heart to be one of contrition and utter humility, broken before Your Majesty. I love You my LORD Jesus. Unite my heart to fear Thy name dear LORD. In Jesus’ name, amen.
