FEARING THE LORD is a DIVINE COMMAND AND A DAILY CHOICE

“For that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the Lord:” Proverbs 1:29

God commands all men to fear Him. Any person who claims he just wants to love God and not fear Him, is exposed as a rebel – someone who is lawless, doing things on their own terms. “Depart from me ye cursed into everlasting fire” is what’s coming their way! (Matthew 25:41)

May God instill in the depth of our being His holy fear – that we might love and know and seek our LORD all the days of our lives.

It is GOD Himself who puts His fear in our hearts. Read these verses below closely and pray that the LORD will instill His fear deep in your being.

Jeremiah 32:39-40
“And I will give them one heart, and one way, that they may fear me for ever, for the good of them, and of their children after them:
40 And I will make an everlasting covenant with them, that I will not turn away from them, to do them good; but I WILL PUT MY FEAR IN THEIR HEARTS, that they shall not depart from me.”

Is Fearing God Only for the Lost?

Are Christians to fear God? What does “fear” mean? What does it mean to “fear God”? What does the Bible say?

Are Christians to fear God? Is there freedom from fearing judgment? Are there benefits to walking in the fear of the LORD?

“Then had the churches rest throughout all Judaea and Galilee and Samaria, and were edified; and walking in the fear of the Lord, and in the comfort of the Holy Ghost, were multiplied.” Acts 9:31

Are we “walking in the fear of the Lord, and in the comfort of the Holy Ghost”?

God blessings are conditional and He will only bless, make whole, heal those who truly fear Him.

“For as the heaven is high above the earth, so great is his mercy toward them that fear him.” Psalms 103:11

“The Sun of Righteousness” who is Jesus Christ, “light of the world,” arises to bless His own! (John 8:12)

“But UNTO YOU THAT FEAR MY NAME shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings; and ye shall go forth, and grow up as calves of the stall.” Malachi 4:2

Notice the condition in the verse above. We must fear His holy name to receive the healing, wholeness, and blessings of Christ Our LORD. God blesses those who fear Him.

“He will bless them that fear the LORD, both small and great.” Psalms 115:13
Fearing God is the only way to be “satisfied” – now and forever.

Proverbs 19:23 “The fear of the LORD tendeth to life: and he that hath it shall abide satisfied; he shall not be visited with evil.”

Anyone who isn’t living in “The fear of the LORD”, is not “satisfied.” Did you catch that? Read the verse above again.
Fearing the LORD brings satisfaction and protection. Did you catch that?

The case of Matthew 10: In this chapter, Jesus is exclusively speaking to His very own disciples. (are you His disciple?):

Matthew 10:24,28 “The disciple is not above his master, nor the servant above his lord…And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.”

What could be clearer?

In Luke 12:1,4,5 the Son of God forewarned us: “…he began to say unto his disciples (not the lost) first of all…And I say unto you my friends, Be not afraid of them that kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do. But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him.”

Notice here that Jesus “forewarned” His very own “disciples” and “friends” that it was possible for them to be “killed” by the heavenly Father and “cast into hell” if they feared men more than God. Where does that leave OSAS (once saved always saved)?

MOST Christians have been weakened in their resolve via Satan’s first lie which is peddled today under the clichés of OSAS (once saved always saved or eternal security). This unconditional security heresy removes the holy fear of God from the hearts of those who allow it and lowers their guard, always leading to sin. This is EXACTLY what happened to Adam and Eve when this doctrine of devils was introduced to them (Genesis 2:17; 3:4).

“Let not thine heart envy sinners: but be thou in the fear of the LORD all the day long.” Proverbs 23:17

Let me stop here and ask you to examine whether or not you truly believe the Bible. The question is not whether or not you say you believe the Bible, but do you really believe it is God’s inspired Word and final authority? If you can at this point still deny that ALL people, whether they have been saved in the past or not, have a responsibility to live holy before God and fear Him, then it is clear that you do not believe the Bible. Or, more plainly, you are simply calling God, your Judge, a liar.

Consider what He says about being possessed by the holy fear of the LORD:

Psalms 2:11 “Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling.”

Joshua 24:14 “Now therefore fear the LORD, and serve him in sincerity and in truth: and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the flood, and in Egypt; and serve ye the LORD.”

“God is greatly to be feared in the assembly of the saints, and to be had in reverence of all them that are about him.” Psalms 89:7

“Sanctify the LORD of hosts himself; and let him be your fear, and let him be your dread.” Isaiah 8:13

Here in the following text, Romans chapter 11, Paul is talking to the Gentile Christians about their position with God and using the originally chosen Jews as an example.

“Thou (Gentile believers) wilt say (boastfully) then, The branches (Jews) were broken off, that I might be grafted in. Well; because of unbelief they were broken off, and thou standest by faith. Be not highminded, but fear: For if God spared not the natural branches (the Jews), take heed lest he also spare not thee. Behold therefore the goodness and severity of God: on them which fell, severity; but toward thee, goodness, if thou continue in his goodness: otherwise thou also shalt be cut off.” Romans 11:19-22

What does the word “fear” mean?

What does it mean to “fear God”?

Here is Romans 11, PHOBEO is the Greek word for “fear.” According to the Strong’s Concordance, this Greek word PHOBEO means “to frighten, to be alarmed; to be in awe of, revere (+sore): afraid, fear (exceedingly), reverence.” YET, much more important than any Hebrew or Greek study, is simply what is conveyed through God’s Word in our own language. After reading the follow verse again, there should be no doubt at all as to what it means to “fear God.”

“Sanctify the LORD of hosts himself; and let him be your fear, and let him be your dread.” Isaiah 8:13

A life that is not holy unto the Lord is clear proof that we do not fear (not afraid of, not in awe of) God.

“Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man. For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.” Ecclesiastes 12:13-14

MANY fear mere sinful men and have men above God. Repent. God is calling you to truly repent and when you do, you will cease attempting to justify and bid Godspeed to the enemies of Christ and say with Paul: “Let GOD be true and EVERY man a liar.” (Romans 3:4; 2 John 10-11)

“having men’s persons in admiration because of advantage.” Jude 16

“For they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God.” John 12:43

“for if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ.” Galatians 1:10
You are in need of true repentance.

Those Who Fear God Fear No Man

“For do I now persuade men, or God? or do I seek to please men? for if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ.” Galatians 1:10

“What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us? 32 He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things? 33 Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God’s elect? It is God that justifieth. 34 Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.” Romans 8:31-34

There’s Freedom in Fearing God – No Fear of Judgment as we Abide/Serve Him

Because of the One who is the “advocate with the Father,” Jesus Christ the righteous, those in Christ have “boldness (full confidence, assurance) in the day of judgment.” (1 John 2:1-2; 4:17)

“That he would grant unto us, that we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies might serve him without fear, 75  In holiness and righteousness before him, all the days of our life. ” Luke 1:74-75

The key words in this blessed passage are “serve … holiness and righteousness.” These are the conditions for being able to serve the LORD with no fear of future judgment as far as damnation. Though we are to fear God, God’s Word also tells us that Jesus came so that we can “serve him without fear.” (Luke 1:74) How do we synthesize or assimilate this with the whole counsel of God’s Word? It’s simple: As long as we are serving the LORD, that is, abiding in Christ (John 15:1-6), then we need not fear His judgment because we are “hid with Christ in God.” (Colossians 3:1-4)

“And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him. 17  Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world. 18  There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.” 1 John 4:16-18

All fear is cast out of the hearts of those who dwell with the LORD in His love.We are instructed to “keep” ourselves in that love as we look for His “abundant mercy” at the soon return of Jesus Christ! (1 Peter 1:3; 1 John 4:16-18; Jude 21)

“Oh how great is thy goodness, which thou hast laid up for them that fear thee; which thou hast wrought for them that trust in thee before the sons of men!” Psalms 31:19

Those who abide intimate in Christ have the full assurance of hope and joy in believing that they will see the goodness of the LORD for all eternity!

“For I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth: 26 And though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God: 27 Whom I shall see for myself, and mine eyes shall behold, and not another; though my reins be consumed within me.” Job 19:25-27

ALL who truly fear God are instilling the fear of the LORD in others. The reason that lame hireling you sit under isn’t invoking the fear of God in you is because he has no fear of God himself but is rather building his own castle in the sand at your expense.

Should God’s People be Allowed to Give? [podcast]

Audio Player

Letting people know the opportunity to give doesn’t seem to be the same as asking or begging for money…. Jesus told us all to “lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven” and so cutting off this opportunity doesn’t seem wise or helpful to the eternal treasure of those saints right?

Christ commanded His people to lay up treasure in Heaven and in doing so your treasure and your heart will be in Heaven, not on earth (Matthew 6:19-24). Giving also prevents our hearts from loving and serving the mammon of this world which would prevent us from being in glory.

Jesus Himself, His ministry with His holy apostles, allowed people to give, to lay up treasure in Heaven (Matthew 6:19-21). Otherwise Judas would not have been the treasurer, he would have had no bag to store the offerings. Also, in the temple when Jesus sat and watched how men were giving, did that not further sanction and facilitate also the giving of the saints to His work? See Mark 12:41-44.

“Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: 20  But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: 21  For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. 22  The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light. 23  But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness! 24  No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon. ” Matthew 6:19-24

Allowing people to give to God’s work is opening the floodgates for God’s Word to be furthered in the earth, in the hearts of men and to allow the laying up of treasure in Heaven as our LORD instructed.

“But this I say, He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully. 7 Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver. 8  And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work: 9  (As it is written, He hath dispersed abroad; he hath given to the poor: his righteousness remaineth for ever. 10  Now he that ministereth seed to the sower both minister bread for your food, and multiply your seed sown, and increase the fruits of your righteousness;)” 2 Corinthians 9:6-11

So if God loves the person who gives cheerfully, where better are they to do their giving but to the work of the One who stated these words? Then the LORD gives consequent blessings to those who give as He states in the above passage.

And so though we don’t beg for money, we must never disallow the giving of Christ’s saints. If we do, we hinder the blessing of God on their lives and perhaps in laying up eternal treasure which Jesus commanded (Matthew 6:19-21).

It seems some become disillusioned when they realize they’ve been deceived by wolves in sheep’s clothing. Then they don’t give at all and yet the Word instructs us to give and to specifically give to the ministries that feed us the pure Word (Galatians 6:6; 1 Timothy 5:17-18).

Notice here that Paul speaks against coveting and yet then speaks of the blessedness of giving and that those who give are the ones who are blessed.

Acts 20:33–35 “I have coveted no man’s silver, or gold, or apparel. 34  Yea, ye yourselves know, that these hands have ministered unto my necessities, and to them that were with me. 35  I have shewed you all things, how that so labouring ye ought to support the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive.”

When we choose to give, it is for God’s glory and our own good.

Did the apostle Paul and the early church take up collections? Answer: Yes. See 1 Corinthians 16:1-2. To refuse to allow God’s people to give is a sin and out of the order of God established from Genesis to Revelation. In Exodus 35, God’s people gave so much that the LORD had to tell them to stop. Would to God we had that problem these days. It’s quite the opposite in this late hour unless you look at the masses of gullible dupes who empty their pockets on the end time wolves who are making merchandise of them (2 Peter 2:1-3).

–—  Nearly half of Jesus’ parabolic teachings deal with stewardship. Remember, in the temple Jesus never told the Jews to remove the treasury (coffers where people have the privilege to give). No, in fact, He sat right next to it in order to watch how people were giving and neglecting to give (Mark 12:41-44).

“Now concerning the collection FOR THE SAINTS, as I have given order to the churches of Galatia, even so do ye. 2 Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come.” 1 Corinthians 16:1-2

THE EARLIEST followers of Christ are our example and they gave to the body of Christ, not the lost! Divine priority! See Acts 2:44-45; 4:32-35; 1 Corinthians 16:1-3; Galatians 6:10, etc. “And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me. … Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me.” (Matthew 25:40, 45)

The earliest Christians gave to the needy Christians, not the world.

“But now I go unto Jerusalem to minister unto the saints. 26 For it hath pleased them of Macedonia and Achaia to make a certain contribution for the poor saints which are at Jerusalem.” Romans 16:25-26

What Church is Jesus Coming Back for? [podcast]

Are you personally, intimately familiar with the words of Holy Scripture found in Ephesians 5:25-27?

“Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God. 22 Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body. 24 Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing. 25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; 26 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, 27 That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.” Ephesians 5:21-27

Jesus is coming back for a church without spot or wrinkle or any such thing but one that is “holy and without blemish.” So this speaks of those who were His and yet presently have spotted garments, sin they haven’t repented of (Ephesians 5:25-27).

“Be ye holy”

“But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; 16  Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.” 1 Peter 1:15-16

“NO MAN shall see the Lord” without “holiness”

“Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord:” Hebrews 12:14

Regrettably, most preachers today are so busy making excuse for sin that they refuse to disclose this preeminent, self-evident New Testament truth.

“But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up. 11 Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness, 12 Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?” 2 Peter 3:10-12

As this fallen world system and its inhabitants spiral unalterably downward in darkness and disarray, it becomes even more essential for the wise virgin saint to be anchored in the LORD in private prayer, praise, thanksgiving, and Bible reading. No man shall withstand the darkness of this late hour who is not seeking the LORD diligently, daily, relentlessly – demonstrating perpetually that they love the LORD supremely more than self or any other (Matthew 24:10-13, 22). Memorize 1 Chronicles 16:11; Psalms 57:7; 63:8.

IF he’s not hastening you to the holiness of God, he’s playing you for your allegiance to him, and perhaps your money! are you a gullible pawn? Read 2 Peter 2 and 3.

SO, the sinful seminarian wolf you call your “pastor” isn’t preaching the return of Christ, the cross, the necessity of personal holiness, hell, the essential of repentance, or Christ, the Messiah….. and you still sit under that darkness? Repent.

“Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. 3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; 4 And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.” 2 Timothy 4:2-4

SO MANY have more faith, more confidence in SIN than they do in the SAVIOR who came and died to make us free from ALL SIN! That’s a cross-less false gospel! Just as Jude foretold, these deceivers – “ungodly men” – cover their sins with a false grace message (Jude 3-4). With no exception, the saving grace of God – IFFFF you really have it – delivers you from sin and never justifies you in sin! Time to repent and be changed today! …. These grace abusing tares want to relish a false grace message that erroneously says that God is going to save them IN their sin but the Bible says Jesus came to save us “FROM” our sin – not in our sins (Matthew 1:21; John 1:29; Titus 2:11-4, etc.). SO, God’s grace isn’t sufficient to deliver you from sin? If you believe that you don’t know Him.

Some among us are so enthralled in listening to modern end times teachers as they seek to figure everything out, that they are not abiding in Christ. These are among the foolish virgins.

ARE YOU spending more time engrossed in some supposed end times scenario than you are obeying God by doing the Great Commission mandate? If so, you are not ready to meet Jesus and in big trouble. Isn’t it time to let God be God and to get about the Father’s business?

How we walk in “Strong Confidence” [podcast]

Audio Player

“In the fear of the LORD is strong confidence: and his children shall have a place of refuge.” Proverbs 14:26

“Strong confidence” is only found in fearing God, in walking in the fear of the LORD.

“The fear of the LORD is a fountain of life, to depart from the snares of death.” Proverbs 14:27

We are instructed to “forget not all his benefits” (Psalms 103:2) …… In this passage, we are promised benefits from our LORD:

  • “strong confidence”
  • “a place of refuge”
  • “depart from the snares of death”

Our part is to walk in the fear of the LORD.

“Strong Confidence” that glorifies God and not man, comes from walking in the fear of the LORD, which means we are obeying Him.

Like the psalmist, we should pray to God to “unite my heart to fear they name.”

The psalmist prayed:

“Teach me thy way, O LORD; I will walk in thy truth: unite my heart to fear thy name.” Psalms 86:11

To “unite” in this verse means to combine, to become one…. permeate our innermost being.

When we truly walk in the fear of God, we fear nothing else.

Fearing God means we fear no man.

“The LORD is on my side; I will not fear: what can man do unto me?” Psalms 118:6

“What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us? 32 He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?” Romans 8:31-32

David and Paul walked in the fear of the LORD, and thereby were possessed with “strong confidence” and consequently feared no man or devil.

We can fear God without walking “In the fear of the LORD.” We should pray and endeavor to live in the fear of the LORD.

“Let not thine heart envy sinners: but be thou in the fear of the LORD all the day long.” Proverbs 23:17

So there seems to be the desire of God for His children to be permeated with His fear, to live in the fear of the LORD.

“Then had the churches rest throughout all Judaea and Galilee and Samaria, and were edified; and walking in the fear of the Lord, and in the comfort of the Holy Ghost, were multiplied.” Acts 9:31

The members of the early church were “edified” ….

  • “walking in the fear of the Lord,
  • and in the comfort of the Holy Ghost,
  • were multiplied.”

Let us always be grounded in the foundational essential biblical truth of knowing God—that He created us to know Him (John 17:3).

“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.” Proverbs 1:7

“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.” Proverbs 9:10

The life of the disciple of Jesus is learning to let God have His way in us, to lay our own will…. to let God be in control.

How many of us are realizing just how much sinful chaos and calamity transpires when we are in control instead of God?

Is this not part of the reason John the Baptist could so readily cry out “He must increase but I must decrease”? (John 3:30)

Are you reading Romans 6 each morning beloved of God?

Are you learning the cross life?

“Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.” Ecclesiastes 12:13

“And I say unto you my friends, Be not afraid of them that kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do. 5 But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him.” Luke 12:4-5

“In the fear of the LORD” the born-again believer is “hid with Christ in God” and fully assured, full of divine confidence!

“For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.” Colossians 3:3

In being crucified with Christ, we are hid not only from the evil of others, but primarily and most importantly, we are hid from the evil of self, the self-life.

Beware of the often-peddled cheap counterfeit, where people are instructed to learn to love themselves. The Bible commands us to love and fear God and love others, not self. In fact, loving self is the root sin that brought the original fall of mankind and remains as that sin which keeps men from God—pride in self instead of fearing God!

Those who walk in the fear of the LORD, live a crucified life. They walk in the “strong confidence” of the LORD (Proverbs 14:26).

You are no longer your own, you’ve been bought with the price of the very and precious blood of Jesus.

“What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? 20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.” 1 Corinthians 6:19-20

Prayer: Father, in Jesus’ name, please forgive me for the sin of self-idolatry and not fearing You. I now repent. Please forgive and cleanse me of this sin. I here and now declare and choose to trust You with my life. I love You Jesus!
