“The heart of the righteous studieth to answer: but the mouth of the wicked poureth out evil things.” (Proverbs 15:28)

Peter had a bad habit of putting his foot in his mouth. He was one of the Lord’s most zealous disciples, but not one of His most studious.

Knowing how to bridle our tongue is a mark of maturity. “If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body” (James 3:2). A mouth without a filter reveals a man whose worship of God is not there. “If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man’s religion is vain” (James 1:26).

We worship God when our heart, mind, and body are in submission to Him. We don’t act on every impulse; we don’t speak whatever we think or feel. We take all things to God first. We ask Him whether the words of our mouth and the meditation of our heart are acceptable in His sight. Before our mouth responds, our heart studies. The issue is never whether we think something is good, or right, or necessary to say; it is always: “Lord, is this acceptable to you? Should I speak or stay silent?” “The lips of the righteous know what is acceptable: but the mouth of the wicked speaketh frowardness” (Prov. 10:32).

Peter was a growing disciple. As he matured, he added virtue to his faith; knowledge to his virtue; and temperance to his knowledge (2 Pet. 1:5,6). The once intemperate follower of Jesus became the student of Christ who had learned how to rule his spirit and tongue. And to his temperance was added patience.

One of the chief differences between the wicked and the righteous is that the wicked can’t wait. They have no patience. They want what they want and they want it now. The righteous wait on the Lord for all things. Like their Master they are meek. They wear the yoke that He wore. They do nothing of themselves. As they hear from God, they judge; doing and saying only what He permits.

We spare ourselves so much trouble by being enrolled in the school of Christ, and learning of Him. He keeps us from the folly of our own way. He leads us in paths of righteousness and peace. As we let Him keep our mouth, He will keep our soul from so much unnecessary drama.

We are tested constantly. Failing the test can so often be chalked up to one simple thing: we didn’t study. We were wise in our own conceits, thinking we knew more than we did. Our response was wrong because the preparations of our heart and the answer of our tongue were not of the Lord.

Develop good study habits. Before you act; before you speak, learn to enquire of the Lord. Study to answer! By the Spirit of the Lord your heart can hear, your tongue can be tamed, and you can pass every test!

“Set a watch, O Lord, before my mouth; keep the door of my lips.” Psalms 141:3

God’s Universal Way of Fighting with Todd Tomasella and Travis Bryan III [podcast]

“Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil” Hebrews 2:14

“Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.” Romans 12:21

“Powerful message! Thank you. I was always a fighter. But I fought for myself. And have had to learn through the cross life that meekness is not weakness. It’s actually strength in God to keep quiet and not have to retaliate when attacked or persecuted. But taking a step back, and asking God to bless them while lifting them up in prayer to the Lord. This is the bowels of mercy extended to those who attack us and to know as Paul did, I am the least of all the saints. And let God repay. Romans 12:19.” Karen Cochran

Man Shall not Live by Bread Alone [podcast]

“As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:” 1 Peter 2:2

Spiritual growth occurs when we ingest the words of God, embrace, incorporate, and walk them out.

“Neither have I gone back from the commandment of his lips; I have esteemed the words of his mouth more than my necessary food.” Job 23:12

The counsel of the Lord standeth for ever, the thoughts of his heart to all generations.”Psalms 33:11

The graphic message below is from a dear sister in Christ named Cassandra, on SubStack:

“But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. 23  For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: 24  For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. 25  But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.” James 1:22-25

“Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; 32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” John 8:31-32

“Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” 2 Timothy 2:15

Thy words were found, and I did eat them; and thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine heart: for I am called by thy name, O Lord God of hosts.” Jeremiah 15:16

YOUR PRAYER: Holy Father, thank You for finding and forgiving me and saving me into Your eternal family. Help me realize the utter importance of feeding on Your Word daily. I love You dear LORD Jesus. Help me to love You more LORD. Help me to feed, to nourish the members of Your body with Your Word. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
