Apostasy

Is Backsliding Possible?

“Why then is this people of Jerusalem slidden back by a perpetual backsliding? they hold fast deceit, they refuse to return.” Jeremiah 8:5

Note: No person could possibly slide back from something they never possessed.

Jesus says that someone who believes and is saved can then afterwards “fall away” (Luke 8:13). Jesus also says, speaking of those “in me” that they will be cast into the fire if they do not “abide” in Him, which means to remain (John 15:6). Paul said that if believers don’t continue in the goodness of God, they will receive the “severity” of His judgment and be “cut off” (Romans 11:20-22).

“Well; because of unbelief they were broken off, and thou standest by faith. Be not highminded, but fear: 21 For if God spared not the natural branches, take heed lest he also spare not thee. 22 Behold therefore the goodness and severity of God: on them which fell, severity; but toward thee, goodness, if thou continue in his goodness: otherwise thou also shalt be cut off.” Romans 11:10-22

The apostle Peter says:

“For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning. 21 For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after they have known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them.” 2 Peter 2:20-21

IF God doesn’t send backsliders to Hell, what’s this? Why did He do this below to His own people?

“And it came to pass, as he had made an end of speaking all these words, that the ground clave asunder that was under them: 32 And the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed them up, and their houses, and all the men that appertained unto Korah, and all their goods. 33 They, and all that appertained to them, went down alive into the pit, and the earth closed upon them: and they perished from among the congregation.” Numbers 16:31-33

Did you realize that Jesus Himself invented the term “fall away”? See Luke 8:13.Iif such were not possible, why would the very Son of God say such a thing?

The Bible teaches that backsliding is possible and that backsliders must be re-converted, brought back to God via repentance and confession of sin.

“Brethren, if any of you do err from the truth, and one convert him; 20 let him know, that he which converteth the sinner from the error of his way shall save a soul from death, and shall hide a multitude of sins. James 5:19-20″

There is no present security outside of abiding in Christ – if so, Jesus is a liar (John 15).

Those who do not remain/abide in Him to the end of their lives will be cast into the fires of eternal damnation. See John 15:1-6.

The message of the false prophets is that we are safe and secure while living in sin (Jeremiah 23:17; Lamentations 2:14; Amos 9:10, 2 Peter 2:20-21; Jude 3-4 etc.).

“Thy prophets (leaders) have seen vain and foolish things for thee: and they have not discovered thine iniquity, to turn away thy captivity; but have seen for thee false burdens and causes of banishment.” Lamentations 2:14

“If we deny him, he also will deny us…” 2 Timothy 2:12

One writer notes:

“Unconditional Eternal Security proponents focus on Christ as Savior. Their entire doctrine denies Him as Lord. It is clear in Romans 10:9-10, that one must believe in his or her heart that He is both. So, when they go about telling people they must sin everyday, and telling them no amount or type of sin can void their salvation, they are actively opposing the Lordship of Christ. They only agreed to half of the requirement. It is the reason they believe they can be half committed but fully saved. It is truly sad.”

Once Jesus saves you, Satan’s job becomes getting you to backslide ….

And, WHO does Satan use to peddle the lie that seduces people to slide back?

So you’ve been genuinely born again? IF so, good. Stay saved by remaining in Christ. The strongest appeal of Satan is to seduce you through false teachers who pose as Christian ministers (2 Corinthians 11:12-15). The men who teach you that you are “once saved always saved,” “eternally security,” want your approval. They want you to be at ease, “lukewarm” (Revelation 3:15-16). This is Satan’s play, his seduction of your soul – to get you to be “at ease,” to let down your guard, to cease fighting the good fight of faith, to rob the fear of God from your heart (Amos 6:1; 1 Timothy 6:12). Satan did just this in the Garden of Eden and it led to the fall of mankind (Genesis 2:17; 3:4).

This is why it’s essential that you personally seek God daily, diligently searching, studying God’s Word for yourself – as Scripture commands you to do (2 Timothy 2:15) The Importance of Personal, Organic Bible Study
