“Let thine heart RETAIN my words.” Proverbs 4:4

Have you had a deep longing to know God’s Word better, yet didn’t know where to turn? Well, God has seen your desire – the one He put deep inside you. And, this very brief article is part of His answer/solution.

STUDYING the Word of God is no casual, non-essential hobby to the true disciple. Rather, it’s a daily necessity – to be filled with the life of Christ who is the One revealed in and through the Holy Scriptures (Matthew 4:4; John 6:63; 1 Peter 2:2, etc.). Any person claiming to be saved who does not study God’s Word as the highest priority of his/her life, has already backslidden. Please pass this on to every Christian you know.

Don’t wait for your pastor to get you into God’s Word because most pastors are self-serving hireling wolves who simply want you to patronize their weekly business which is nothing more than an entertainment center they call church which is totally irreconcilable with New Testament Christianity and what true fellowship really is (Acts 2:42-47; Colossians 3:16, etc.).  Run for your life from any wolf posing as a pastor who isn’t doing everything in his power to get you into God’s written Word daily.

There will be no increase in your personal Bible learning – breaking the curse of Biblical-illiteracy – without deliberate action. You must ask the LORD to forgive you for neglecting His Precepts and then set your course this very day to embark upon an ever-deepening study of His Word – to “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” (2 Timothy 2:15) Beloved, do not be “ashamed” by remaining illiterate of God’s Word. You must learn and know the words of the LORD in order to be used of Him and there is no shortcut. Refuse to be “destroyed for lack of knowledge.” (Hosea 4:6)

“But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear.” 1 Peter 3:15

Let’s not come up empty handed any longer! Make the quality decision to learn God’s Word for yourself and stop depending on others. Embarking upon diligent topical and systematic Bible study is the answer.

“Have not I written to thee excellent things in counsels and knowledge, That I might make thee know the certainty of the words of truth; that thou mightest answer the words of truth to them that send unto thee?” Proverbs 22:20-21

The Word of God is learned, one truth at a time, “But the word of the LORD was unto them precept upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little.” Isaiah 28:13

“How can a Christian ‘know’ God if they don’t read His Word?  Jesus is the Word that became flesh (John 1:14).  How can anyone say they received a “revelation” from God?  He has in these last days spoken to us by His Son (Hebrews 1:2).  How will you know sound doctrine from false doctrine?  All Scripture is given by inspiration of God (2 Timothy 3:16).  To be filled with the life of Christ, is to be filled with the Spirit.  Jesus said, ‘But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.’ (John 14:26).” Byron Robertson

If you don’t have a daily time of reading and studying God’s Word, here’s perhaps a boost to get you a track to run on.

  • Read the proverb of the day. There are 31 proverbs, one for each day of the month, then …
  • Jump back one book and read a Psalm, then …
  • Read at least two chapters in the New Testament Scriptures …
  • Begin with a prayer to the Author of Holy Scripture to teach you and to give you understanding.
