Christ’s Compassion

Jesus left the glory He shared with His Father forever to come and die for you and for me.

“But God commendeth (exhibited, displayed) his love toward us, in that, WHILE WE WERE YET SINNERS, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8

As those He undeservingly found and rescued, should we be moved with compassion toward those who do not yet know Him? After all, when we were yet sinners, living in sin, separated from Him, He came and died so we could be reconciled to Him, RIGHT?

Regrettably, many times today we see angry street preachers yelling at sinners, calling them names, and holding up signs commanding unregenerate sinners to “STOP SINNING.” Nothing could be more misrepresentative of Christ and His holy apostles, none of which approached sinners in that hateful fashion. In fact, the ones Jesus rebuked were these very self-righteous religious people who are holding these signs and approaching other sinners with their harsh, arrogant, and degrading language and threatenings.

“And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people. 36 But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd. 37 Then saith he unto his disciples, The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few; 38 Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth labourers into his harvest.” Matthew 9:35-38

Like Jesus, when we see sinners, let us ask God to cause our hearts to be “moved with compassion” and not condemnation (Matthew 9:35-38). Please do this in us heavenly Father, we ask You now, in Jesus’ name.

Something is greatly amiss in the hearts and lives of the angry street preachers who yell AT people as if they are their enemies. Some act as if they are not themselves worthy of divine wrath, outside of Christ who came and showed compassion on their wretched souls by dying on that cross for them (Romans 5:6-8; 1 Timothy 1:15; Titus 3:5-6). My suggestion for these angry street preachers is that they step aside for a while and get before the LORD. Find a group of true disciples who walk in God’s love (John 13:35). The LORD’s fruit is definitely not evident in their lives and this indicates that they are disconnected from Him.

When we are abiding in Christ, truly, “the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.” (Romans 5:5)

Read 1 Corinthians 13 each morning this week and pray it, for to God for this love – HIS love!
