The Divine Purpose for Government Authorities

The Divine Establishment and Purpose for Government Romans 13; 1 Timothy 2:1-4

“Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord’s sake: whether it be to the king, as supreme; 14 Or unto governors, as unto them that are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers, and for the praise of them that do well.” 1 Peter 2:13-14

lapa13aDid you catch that?

Government, civil rulers are given for these biblically stated purposes:

for the punishment of evildoers, and for the praise of them that do well.”

Ahab and Jezebel were at the head of Israel and had greatly corrupted it. King Ahab married Jezebel, who was the wife of a phoenecian king.

“But there was none like unto Ahab, which did sell himself to work wickedness in the sight of the LORD, whom Jezebel his wife stirred up.” 1 Kings 21:25

Bible students understand that they were pure evil and corrupted everything they touched. There were many other corrupted leaders in Israel and the realm of civil authority and the church.

When we study Kings and Chronicles, we see that when righteous kings took over in Israel and Judah, they drained the swamp by putting an axe to the root of all sin.
Throughout biblical history we can observe that the LORD had an answer to this rebellion when He sent His prophets to speak to those people.  In the case of Ahab and Jezebel, the LORD sent Elijah and Jehu and others to expose and cleanse it. They drained the swamp.

Human government will always be faulty because we live in a fallen world. Yet, that does not change the fact that God ordained it “for the punishment of evil doers, and for the praise of them that do well.” (1 Peter 2:13-14)

God’s Word reveals that only Christ’s coming “government” will be perfect and perfectly just.

“For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. 7 Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.” Isaiah 9:6-7

BEWARE of the pastors who refuse to teach God’s Word concerning the three institutions that are divinely instituted and revealed through His Word. Also there are self-righteous novices who are running around saying that ALL civil government and all who work for them are Babylon and not of God. This is false.
government-politics-america-rom-13Who ordained civil government? God or Satan?
What is the stated purpose for government?
THERE ARE 3 divinely established, ordained institutions and believers are to be active in each of them.
1. The family
2. The church
3. Government/civil authorities (Romans 13; 1 Timothy 2:1-3, etc.)
Would any Bible believer deny the stated personal responsibility Jesus’ people have in family and the body of Christ (church)? No. Then it seems obvious that we should be teachable concerning out responsibilities to pray for and be active in the civil institution of our land.
Do you want violent criminals roaming your neighborhood? Are you glad that you can call the police (civil authority ordained of God to punish evil doers) when you are in danger? Can you imagine if there were no law and order? No red lights, no rules, just pure anarchy? Look at the countries around the world that are completely void of law and order. They are a catastrophe to put it lightly. There is no justice or protection. That is not God’s will.
Reader, if you are truly a student of the King and His kingdom, I want to exhort you right here and now to study passages like Romans 13 and 1 Timothy 2:1-3 and understand the divine purpose for government.
It’s interesting that most of those who arrogantly believe they are too spiritual to be involved in gov’t as well as family and the church (the 3 divinely ordained institutions in society) aren’t winning anyone to Jesus …. seems like to me that if they were truly spiritual (kingdom minded), they’d be preaching the Gospel and leading people to Jesus.
Satan Does Not Want Christians Involved!
hillary-abortion-christiansSome stand back and curse the darkness by calling all government Babylon. Nonsense. And, it’s only become as wicked as it has due to Christians forsaking their responsibility to be involved. It’s time to mature and in our relationship to participate in family, the body of Christ, and the government – apply His salt which is the only solution for mankind.
“Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men. 14 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. 15 Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. 16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.   Matthew 5:13-16

There is a whole lot of Gospel to preach in the midst of this crooked and perverse nation. (Philippians 2:16) Those who claim to be too good to participate in government have shucked their duty and forfeited the privilege of speaking the light of truth into what they perceive to be darkness. Satan wins.

“That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world; 16 Holding forth the word of life; that I may rejoice in the day of Christ, that I have not run in vain, neither laboured in vain.” Philippians 2:15-16

We are “the salt of the earth” and “the light of the world” which means we are to apply His healing salt solution to all aspects of this life and society by shining the light of His holy truth directly into it (Matthew 5:13-16). And some argue that we need a Christian in that office. Well, apparently God didn’t have a truth speaking, uncompromising Christian to tap for that job. It’s not a Christian office by the way, it’s a secular office that has a definitive role in society as detailed in Romans 13.
If civil authorities are all evil, why did the LORD specifically instruct us to pray for them???

“I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; 2 For kings (civil/government rulers), and for ALL that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. 3 For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour; 4 Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.” 1 Timothy 2:1-4

Did you catch that? The divine purpose for human/civil government is so that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty” and for souls to be saved through the “one Mediator”! (see v5) This is what “is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour.”

It seems obvious from the above passage, that the LORD, who is not the author of confusion, desires and has ordained an orderly societal living model. Here therefore instructs us to pray for and be involved in the stewardship of this process. Satan is the one who wants God’s people to disobey Him by abandoning such a responsibility.

IF all government is evil, then explain Romans 13 which tells us civil authorities are divinely ordained. Also, show us where the Bible says that being in the government is a sin. Look at the 17 soul damning sins in Galatians 5:19-21 (largest compilation list of sins in the Bible)…. and see if it lists being in the government as a sin.

As we shall read now in Romans 13, God ordained government to punish evil doers and reward those who do good.

Romans 13
“Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God. 2 Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation. 3 For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same: 4 For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil. 5 Wherefore ye must needs be subject, not only for wrath, but also for conscience sake. 6 For for this cause pay ye tribute also: for they are God’s ministers, attending continually upon this very thing. 7 Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour.” Romans 13:1-7
Here is more undeniable biblical proof. God told us to pray for the location we are in and that would include the authorities therein.

“And seek the peace of the city whither I have caused you to be carried away captives, and pray unto the LORD for it: for in the peace thereof shall ye have peace.” Jeremiah 29:7

Jeremiah 29:7 is further proof that the LORD wants His people praying for and involved with government. Some people misuse verses such as “come out from among them, and be ye separate.” (2 Corinthians 6:17) Setting ourselves apart to the LORD would include, not exclude, participating. Being sanctified would not include disobedience such as not praying for and participating in all 3 divinely institutions (family, church, government). Satan loves when misled Christians let him have government and run wild with destruction. Is that not how America become hi-jacked by wicked rulers?

You see, those who pretend to be too spiritual to bother voting actually play right into Satan’s hands. God told us to pray for all in authority – because HE ordained it. He instituted civil government for our good and protection and so it is not evil in and of itself. Men are fallen and evil and when we don’t vote they get put into places of authority and wreak havoc.

Self-righteously sitting there and cursing the darkness is the very reason our government become so poisoned with evil men and women. That’s exactly how it got this way in the first place, right? Am I missing something? Remember the 3 institutions God ordained: 1. family, 2. the church/body of Christ, and 3. Government

Many saw this evil and prayed, campaigned and voted. We have some very good men and women  taking over where the wicked held positions. The swamp is being drained of the self-serving, greedy wolves who did more damage than can be calculated. It’s time to rejoice and give Jesus Christ praise for what He has done in response to the prayers of His people! God has wrought a miracle to clear the way for His people to establish His truth in the hearts of men by accomplishing the Great Commission He gave us (Matthew 28:18-20; Mark 16:15-20) Preach saints, preach! Some have this idea that the church must have persecution in order to multiply and be fruitful. No. Jesus’ people do not of necessity have to have persecution to obey. This is yet another opportunity He is giving us. Remember that if there would have been just 10 righteous people in Sodom God would have spared it, right? (Genesis 18)

Prayer: LORD, in the name of Jesus Christ, let my life in this temporal world glorify You alone. Bless Your people to honor You in what You have said in the full counsel of Your Word. Bless us to walk in Your love and truth and to participate fruitfully in influencing government according to Your Word. In Jesus’ name, amen.
