The only ANGER, VENGEANCE or JUDGMENT of God against evil is the Cross of Christ
God’s anger gets vengeance against evil, judges it and destroys it at, and only at, the cross. Jesus died to accomplish God’s vengeance! God never directly kills any evil angel or person.
O Lord God, to whom VENGEANCE belongeth there, shew thyself. LIFT UP THYSELF, thou JUDGE of the earth: render a reward to the proud. Lord, how long shall wicked, how long shall the wicked triumph? Ps 94:1-3.
The term “lift up” or “lifted up” in the KJV is always a literal or metaphorical allusion to the cross. See John 12:31-33 below.
Now is the JUDGMENT of this world: now shall the prince of this world (Satan) be cast out. And I, if I be LIFTED UP from the earth, will draw all men unto me. This he said, signifying what death he should die. Notice “lifted up” literally refers to the cross.
The word “Now” in verse 31 refers to the crucial event about to take place within hours of this utterance, the cross of Calvary. The words “lifted up” also refer to the literal cross. At the cross, God’s enemies, led by their Prince, will be judged, suffer God’s vengeance, be condemned, defeated and cast out. Christ at Calvary triumphed over all God’s spiritual enemies. Taking up the cross daily is also our way of participating in this triumph! Luke 9:23-25; Col 2:15; 2 Cor 2:14-16. We defeat evil with the kindness and self-sacrificial love of the cross. We kill evil with kindness by taking up the cross daily. Rom 12:17-21.
Notice in Ps 94:1-3, the words “vengeance,” “judgment,” and “lifted up” are all apparently connected to the same event. They all simultaneously occurred at Calvary. To repeat for emphasis, the vengeance of God happened at Calvary. Also, by that same event, all men are drawn toward Christ and their salvation. John 12:31-33. Some refuse Christ crucified and then suffer the vengeance and judgment of God. They judge themselves by their own response to Christ crucified and raised. Others accept Christ crucified by faith and are saved.
The judgment and vengeance of God is the cross and only the cross where evil destroys evil. Evil there self-destructs. We see this in Ps 7 below.
In Ps 7:11-12 we find God angry with the wicked every day and threatening that, if the enemy does not turn from his wickedness, God will wet His sword and bend His bow against these enemies. But then we find that God’s anger, bow and sword against His enemies is only found in the cross of Christ where evil is allowed to destroy itself. God’s anger is the cross where evil’s own violence destroys evil. Evil destroys itself at Calvary. See Ps 7:14-16 below.
Behold, he (the evil one) travaileth with iniquity, and hath conceived mischief, and brought forth falsehood. He made a pit, and digged it, and IS FALLEN INTO THE DITCH WHICH HE MADE. His mischief SHALL RETURN UPON HIS OWN HEAD, and HIS VIOLENT DEALING SHALL COME DOWN ON HIS OWN PATE.
Evil destroys itself at the cross. God never directly takes out any anger, vengeance or judgment against anyone, ever. Heb 2:14; 1 Cor 2:6-8. Evil is always only destroyed indirectly. It is destroyed thru the cross!
Both God’s anger and His love are found in the cross of Christ!
